Since Israel is a weapon trading partner with America, they tend to use whatever weapons America sells them.
This means that when America was using M-16's, Israel was using M-16's. Right now however, Israel's army and counterterrorism squads also use the COLT M4A1 assault rifle with 5.56mm Nato cartrdges.

They also use the M-40 rifle for their sniper squads as well as the PSG-1 rifle and the ARTIC WARFARE POLICE rifle made by Accuracy International.

Israel is getting a new Assault rifle called the TAVOR.
The Tavor is particularly efficient in street combat, due its precision and lightness, the statement added. The 5.56-millimetre rifle can fire between 750 and 900 rounds a minute.

At 72 centimetres (28 inches) long, it weighs only 2.8 kilogrammes (six pounds) when empty. When equipped with a telescopic sight, complete with night vision, and a 30-round magazine it weighs 3.635 kilos (eight pounds), IMI said.

Rimrocka is right the M-16 American supplied and since Syria came to the west as a nation they also carry it. Why do you think Condelessa Rice was there yesterday in Beirut. Strange world we live in today.
