They should know that other cultures and countries are not backward just because they are different to the US. This not only applies to third world countries, but other so called first world countries. I find that some Americans have a very strange view of the UK and the sad thing is they really believe it. They think we live in a land where we have tea with the queen everyday at 4pm, followed by dinner with Shakespeare. Some of the more liberated people think that we might have grown up with a nanny like Mary Poppins. The point is that these are all things we know to be fantasy, but genuinely some people seem to think it is true or are to ignorant to try and find out any different.
What Americans need to learn is there are many long standing cultures and societies that need to be understood and respected, rather than treated as abnormal or something that somehow needs to be changed to the American way of life. This is by no means anti-US it's just about trying to really experience and understand life outside your backyard.

About Wales, I would tell them simply this. It may not be that far from civilisation, but nevertheless, it really isn't worth the effort of visiting.
