Alleys are typically narrow lanes that run through the middle of a block, with access to both properties that are back-to-back to each other. Often a detached garage is located here. They are mainly in older sections of town, as most houses these days have the garage built into the front of the house, eliminating the need (and expense) for a road that goes across the back of the property. Avenues are just regular main roads that everybody drives on, whereas alleys are only used by the people whose houses are located on it.
