Mankind has been doing this since they evolved. When the first humans hit Australia about 50,000 years ago, they drove to extinction about 80% of all the wildlife of that continent before they figured out that it wasn't a good idea. When the first humans hit the Americas about 12,000 years ago, they drove to extinction 70-80% of all the wildlife of North and South America before they figured out that it wasn't a good idea. When the first humans hit New Zealand and Madagascar about 1500 years ago they drove to extinction about 70% of the native wildlife before they figured out it wasn't a good idea. When the first humans hit Easter Island about 1000 years ago, they cut down all the forests, destroyed most of the native wildlife and experienced a population crash of about 75% before they figured out it wasn't a good idea. Modern "progress" has nothing to do with it. It is a feature of the human species.

Is this a spiritual question? And when you say "we", who is that? We would be all of us, right? That would mean me too. Last time I looked, I wasn't cutting any forests down, nor killing off nature, though I do eat the random burger now and then. Yes, I'm just goofing off. I realize that many people are very concerned about the things happening in our world. All "we" can do is do what's in front of us. "We" can't do a whole lot about things that happen in faraway places. Unless you're one of the other "we's", that have the money & influence that could do something. If you're one of those "we's", then you have your work cut out for you. In other words, if there's something YOU can do, do it. I do what I can do, with recycling, driving only when necessary, and anything else I CAN do. If you're that concerned about the things that are going on, then see what YOU can do right there in your community, or even through raising money for the thing you're concerned about. As for the "we", there's not much we can do about "them". Take care of your field of influence and, who knows...you might start a trend! <*)))><

By the year 2025 it won't matter much... Unless we have a nice world wide war with with a few nukes to exterminate about a few billion souls this planet will just be a mass of swarming humans. Much like a hand full of fishing worms.

Or a very good pandemic would do the same job..

Some facts t o think about :

The human race took thousands of years to reach 1 billion in about 1825

In the following 100 years it doubled to 2 billion.

Between 1925 and 1976 it doubled again.

By 1990 it was 5.3 billion.

So lets say that right now we are at 6 billion.

The LOWEST forecast is that by 2025 it will be from 7.6 billion to 8.5 billion.

And in the last half of the century it will settle in at about 12 billion.

By 2075 we will double again ...

Think of it... In 250 years we will have gone from 1 billion to 12.

Something has to give.

It's hard to live in a progressive society when you love nature, I know 'cause I am an avid environmentalist too.
Business is business however, and when corporations want to do something, they won't let a few trees or wildlife stop them (most anyway) I know governments are getting a bit better in discussing with these development companies about how to build without hurting alot of the environment etc. As long as the environmental groups, and citizens of the area can agree with their proposals, it should be a positive experience and one that won't affect the wildlife very much if at all.

Look here dont generalize everybody okay. I doubt your neighbor is doing this everyday in the name of progress as he is she claims. It's only rich oil and lumber and other companies that are doing it. They have the money to make and buy politicians and propgandas in order to persuade others to follow in their footsteps. It is crazy, and it's even crazier if your neighbor actually believes while not make a cent out of this kind of destruction. It's absolutely the fault of these rich companies who do not care about the damage they have done. You can also blame all the regular working class for actually equating the rich and powerful with saints and leaders of our world.

Maybe in the end it's because these people are quite stupid and knows very little about the environment, and only do as they are told.
Face it, the majority of this country are highschool dropouts who perfer to follow the rich and powerful rather than doing the right thing.

I don't know about you, but I don't think a planet overrun by lard arsed human beings waddling about the Wal-Mart, desperately seeking the next "thing" they think will make them finally attractive, desireable, and happy, constitutes progress of any kind. Yet, here we are. This is the product of thousands of years of struggle against the elements and each other - a civilization of trashy planets with greasy, stringy hair, mustaches, and purple polyester stretch pants deluding themselves into praying to a non-existent god, dumping their pay checks into pointless, resource wasting products, thinking they're entitled to suck the last possible resource from the earth's crust so long as it'll distract them for a moment or two from the aimlessness of life in a post-industrial corporate capitalist society. The species can't go extinct soon enough, in my opinion. We're killing off nature because people need things to distract them from the reality of existence - that there is no point and once each and everyone of us drops dead, we'll really be gone, as in oblivion, no paintball for eternity in heaven for anyone.

Your question contains an erroneous assumption. We are NOT killing off nature in the name of progress. We are killing off nature in the name of PROFIT.

Many people all over the world realize that our civilization's complete disregard of nature is madness. The problem is that those in power over corporations and/or governments have yet to realize that preserving nature is essential for preserving their power, not to mention their survival, in the long-term. Right now, those in power only see environmental issues in terms of cost and lost profit. Until they can see past their dualistic thinking and reach a more holistic understanding of nature, real progress is unlikely to be made.

We're not killing nature off in the name of Progress, but in the name of Reproduction.

More people need more land and more resources: two people have four chiildren, which become 16 grandchildren, and all 21 people need to live SOMEplace!

Hi Megan;
I'm also concerned about our environment, wildlife, birds, and other critters. Each time there are decisions to go into the habitat of our wildlife, I cringe! People who have no sensibilites, sensitivities, and caring, just keep on destroying more and more of our pristine lands, skies, and oceans. Further, I don't believe they even care that we are destroying Mother Earth! It makes me despise much of the human 'animal' - they are far worse than most any so-called preditor I can think of.
Thank you for making this post available...

It seems greed is stronger than preservation. People don't realize that the trees clean the air and give off oxygen. All the money in the world won't do you any good when you can't breathe.
