Some people say that reading any literature is a waste of time. My own observation is that one's views on the usefulness of religion and reading the Bible and the inerrancy of the Bible depends on one's culture.

Just think of the Danish cartoons riots. Many Muslims take the Koran more seriously even than evangelical Christians take the Bible.

There are also other sacred works, and adherents to those religions -- and members of the relevant cultures -- by and large think reading them important and useful, whether or not they believe.

Belief is not dependent upon ignorance (although Marx and many people today say so), although superstition and peer pressure and cultural factors certainly have impact. (I remember that, many years ago when I was driving in Texas and my car broke down the first thing that a guy who stopped to help asked me was "what is your religion". A weird imposition, I thought. But I didn't know then the importance of religion in small towns in many parts of the USA, including most of the Red states.)

Even intelligent people have the ability to hold great deals of faith. Being smart has nothing to do with religion - it's about what moves and inspires you to believe in something.

Instead of worrying about who is right in what religion - I think we should focus on the idea that the mere fact that so many people DO believe in SOMETHING means that we are very passionate, capable animals...and I think that's comforting.

Assuming by "intelligent" you are referring to worldly wisdom, my thought is that they are using the bible as a historical piece of info. and any belief of such is gained via by reading between the lines so to speak. Of course any real intelligent person knows the bible has been so altered by the catholic church in order to keep people repressed through fear and guilt, as well as a way to maintain authority and control and lets not forget the main asset to the reconstruction of the pearly words of wisdom, MONEY or the equivalent (gold, jewels, offerings of any worth.)

what do you mean by the term (intelligent people ) ? do you mean socially intelligent ? or scientifically intelligent ? there are many ways of being an intelligent person, one can be intelligent in doing math equations but very dump concerning social aspects, so religion has nothing to do with that ,because you can find some intelligent person who believe in superstitions......

Even intelligent minds can be subverted by irrationality. Anyone who can think for themselves will reach the conclusion that the Bible is a rather contradictory set of disconnected myths rewritten and revised countless times and with no actual relevance to modern life. It is fiction, and not particularly well written.

I dont think that believe in whats in writting in a Bible or in a God or Jesus is a matter of being intelligent or not.

The human being is intelligent by nature, is more like a matter or faith or the need to believe in something that guide us and protect us.
