This land that we all call home used to belong to someone else......hundreds of years ago.
Now the idea of Aztlan has infuriated ppl.Do the native americans have a similar idea?Do they want their land back?Do they hate Americans?Whats the friggin difference?

Aztlan taking land back is a pipe dream. We have guns, we made this country great (we'd still live in clay huts if the Aztecs were still around. Oh, wait, they do still live in mud huts in Mexico), and we are not going to give it back.

The difference is this. When the Spaniards conquered what is now Mexico, afterward they would go on to consolidate their Mexico with the lands of the Southwest, which were inhabited by their own native peoples(Navajo, Pueblo, etc). Aztlan is a myth, the TRUE natives of the southwest have no desire to share their land with people who have their history screwed up. Furthermore, as many have pointed out, I see no Native Americans supporting you, instead they are supporting the Americans. Furthrmore, Mexico lost the Mexican War, and they were paid 15 million dollars as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Now, they disregard this part of history, or twist it to fit thier needs. If Mexico would stop dwelling in the past, maybe they could have a better future.

Pancha, Native Americans are not the issue. The issue is illegal immigration. There are too many people entering the USA at our southern border illegally. Those people do not have any rights here and certainly do not deserve to have assistance from our federally funded services, funded by AMERICAN CITIZENS TAXES.

Your Aztlan is a myth, a fairytale. Native Americans are for real. We don't dwell on the past, we live in the HERE and NOW. We were the first people on this land and we will fight FOR it right along with those who once conquered us. We don't 'forget' our history, we just realize it for what it is, H I S T O R Y.

Native Americans are citizens, i think.

As far as Indian reservations, for all of you out there, they count as their own small nations. The heads of th tribe generally make the laws and such. I don't know much about having them wave Old Glory. Also, go out to an Indian reservation. It is not very liveable, you'll see why the land was given to them. I doubt you would live there yourself.(not aimed at you Pancha, but to those who think that the Natives are happy to have some land). On top of being crappy land, it is nothing compared to the pure, pristine lands that they once had access to.

If we broke it all down, all land was stolen. The Louisiana Treaty only sold the US land stolen by the French. The colonies were invaded. Mexico was sorta bought, and the rest was just claimed.

pancha,

i have taken a look at some of the questions you’ve posted and i'm really shocked at the level of ignorance and racism you’ve displayed... i know it may not be your fault if you couldn't go to school and study this stuff, but still, one can learn by observing others, and the library is free to use and there are many educational books out there...

some good reading for you might be “watch for me on the mountain” by forrest carter – this details some of the horror faced by geronimo and his family when his baby was thrown back and forth through the air on the bayonets of solders and his wife had female body parts cut off which she was then gagged to death with… this is only one case that has been documented – there were countless others. the Indians have suffered far more atrocities on american soil then any other race in history.

just to help you get started in your education I’ve included more info and links below about some of the abuse of indians and if you look into this you will find that while we are no longer killing the indian children for sport, we are still robbing the food from their mouths by cheating and stealing their rights from them… these people have never been offered an equal chance in the past and now they wouldn’t know what to do with it if they were. it is not the steeling of the land that I am primarily concerned with but the destruction of the culture, abuse, killings, slavery… etc…

here’s an article on wounded knee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wounded_Knee_Massacre) – though this is well known because it was the last major massacre, this type of thing was commonplace earlier in the century – to name a couple more well known situations the buffalo eradication, and trail of tears (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trail_of_tears) – which my relatives were on and watched their friends and families dropping dead before their eyes.

I also recommend watching “thunderheart” it is a movie based on the true story about the incident at wounded knee in the 1970’s which will help you to get a better idea of some of the very recent situations.

to answer another of your questions about why so many people claim to be Indian, it is because we are. rape of Indian women was very common, so between that and forced assimilation, the Indian gene has reached many, many people. also, most people can prove that they are part indian, because of the daws act of 1893 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawes_Rolls) which accounted for indians and forced them onto the roll… it also required that anyone with more then 3/4 indian blood (http://www.weyanoke.org/jdf-BloodQuantum.html) be assigned a white “guardian” which commonly led to abusive slavery – as in the case of my great grandmother.

I think it’s also important to recognize that while you stated that the crimes against the Indians were 200 years ago, some of the most horrific were actually late 1800’s through mid 1900’s.

Here are some articles to help you understand how the Indians were continually pushed farther and farther west after we “promised” them land then continued to take it away:

http://academic.udayton.edu/race/02rights/native14.htm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Territory

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Removal_Act

oh, and let’s not forget the intercourse act:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Intercourse_Act

I hope this information help to get you started on your self education :) if you still have confusion about whether we should work to try to make good on some of our promises to the indians please feel free to send me a mssg.

I don't know what they feel, but I would be pissed if it were me. I mean, they would be living happy and everything if we white people hadn't come and flipped their world around. But thats water under the bridge and we can do nothing about it.I'm sorry for what happened to their anchestors, but i don't think I had any family here then. They all came over to Ellis Island right before the 1900's.

I don't know what the difference is.To make everybody happy,we'd have to go back 500 yrs.Let's just think of it like this : Now all ya'll anti-illegals know how the Indians felt when their land got invaded by whites.Except that the illegals didn't bring you small pox and kill off your total food supply for the skins. And ya'll aren't stuck on smelly reservations without enough food or clothing for your families.Think that way.

im going to go ahead and say that most indians (native americans) cant really be too angry, because they werent around before we were here. they dont know what theyre missing out on (if anything), so how can they really be angry?

On the other hand, they have been given land and stuff to live as they used to, and theyve pretty much stagnated. so if the stupid settlers didnt massacre all the natives, perhaps they would be happy that we catapulted their culture forward (literally) thousands of years. Like if some advanced alien culture came here and shared their tech in exchange for Texas. Would we really be upset if the net gain was positive?

Unfortunately thats not what happened and we did wipe out their culture in a genocide worse than the Holocaust--so sure, they have every right to hate americans.

Aztlan is the mythical homeland of the Aztecs...and people believe that it's in the land that America took away from Mexico from Santa Ana...Yes, some mexicans would like it back...but America being America won't give it for nothing...They even put the native americans in reservation camps...some government...huh?

2006-07-25 01:42:24 · answer #8 · answered by Killer 3 · 0 1

Well, they will say the difference is that American Indians are already citizens. They didn't come here to invade, we just did it to them, what does that make us? Illegal aliens!

Truth be told, about half this country was stolen from Mexico. The treaties that were signed were NEVER recognized and even to this day, are not recognized, by the Mexican govt. Santa Ana was a dictator who signed the treaties with this govt. to sell that land for 18 million dollars, the govt. back in Mexico city, the capital of Mexico NEVER recognized it to be a legitimate treaty....

Mexico was ripped off, but since they had their own issues, and were weak from the Mexican war, the couldn't fight to defend that land....

You are clueless Pancha. They ARE the Americans, the true Americans. It's funny, I have NEVER seen a Native American hold up any flag but Old Glory unlike the menaces you defend.
