Well, as other ppl have said, you can eat anything you want after you get the braces. Just try to stay away from popcorn and really chewy or hard stuff. Thick hard chocolate is probably the worst, but there are ways to get around everything. Give your teeth a really good cleaning and flossing, and a good rinse with mouthwash before you go in. Flossing will be a major pain in the a$$ afterwards.
It'll be painful for the first few days but you'll soon get used to them. Don't worry, it won't feel like that the whole time you have them! Make sure you get silicone or wax from your ortho (silicone is best) to put on the brackets that scrape the insides of your mouth. And make sure you have Advil on hand (I find it works the best and isn't harmful to your stomach like aspirin)
Soft foods to eat: soup, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, well cooked spaghetti or macaroni, pudding, ice cream, smoothies.... cold stuff is best, but you'll feel like having something cooked (and not sugary!) at some point. Good luck!

I had braces for 2 and a half years. I never had a problem eating the foods that I would have noramlly eaten before I got my braces on. The orthodontist tells you not to eat popcorn or watermelon, because the seeds could potentailly harm your braces. I ate it anyway. I never had to go in to get a bracket fixed or anything. The braces are pretty tough. As far as pain goes, my teeth really only hurt right after a trip from the orthodontist and were sore for about a day. On days like those just stick to soft foods such as soup or whatever else you like. If you're still feeling pain take some tylenol or ibuprofren, whatever works for you. You'll get used to the way the braces feel after a while. Good luck!

I wore braces for two and one-half years.
My advice to you is to take some Tylenol before an hour before you go to get your braces. Anbesol gel helps, too.
When you have braces you're not supposed to chew gum, eat ice, popcorn, or anything hard or chewy. Your orthodontist will give you a list of dos and don'ts. I generally followed instructions. I did eat a few things on the don't list and I think I popped a bracket loose once. The braces will rub the inside of your mouth raw until your skin gets toughened up. The ortho will give you some wax to place over the brackets, this really helps.
The thing I found most bothersome was worrying about those pesky rubber bands. I didn't wear mine religiously and my teeth moved into place just fine. The orthodontist could tell I didn't wear them much though. LOL Those things are really painful and it's makes eating a real challenge.

First of all, DONT get the invisble kind. I've known many people who had them and they get dirty really easily. I had braces myself, and I prefered the regular kind. Also, when you first get your braces put on, its really gonna hurt your teeth, and I mean REALLY. They dont really affect how you eat unless you tear up the inside of your lip, so you dont really need to avoid any foods.
The orthodontist will tell you not to chew gum, eat hard candy, etc, but I did all that stuff and it turned out okay. But make sure you use that special floss for people with braces, it really comes in handy! Alright, that was a very long answer on my part, but good luck and enjoy those soon-to-be-straight teeth!

There is an ortho gel that you can put on gums to numb them, I'd suggest buying a tube. I got my braces when I was 13, and the first day, that's the only way i could survive. I cried so much. Afterwards, it was fine. You won't be able to eat anything super sticky or chewy, and popcorns a nono, otherwise not a big deal.

Pfft, I had braces for 7 years, and I ate whatever I wanted. And before you say that maybe that's why I had them for so long, consider this, originally it was supposed to take 10 years. Unless you eat like a moron, you should be able to eat most anything with out any serious damage. It may take awhile to get used to it, but once you do, you'll eat just like you did before you had them.

No nuts, gum, jawbreakers, etc after you get them on.
Make sure your teeth are clean when you go.
Milkshakes and pudding and ice cream are usually what are eaten the day of and the next day, when the pain is the most.
I have a high pain tolerance, so I don't know if that's why I never experienced that pain or if I was just lucky.
I was able to eat regular from day 1.

Eat whatever you want now because you wont be able to have it when you get braces. Braces hurt like hell at first. They are not pleasant. You''l just have to make the best of it.

Slimfast Milkshakes or any other Meal Replacement Shake
It doesn't really hurt so much as just leaves you tender for a few days.
Apple Sauce, Yogurt and Mashed Potatos are also awesome :)
