I have a Sony DSC H1 with 12x optical zoom (out to 432 mm), 5 MP, a 2.5 in LCD, and Image Stabilization. I love it!
Since it is a 2005 model, prices are running $300 to $350 (plus a Memory Stick Pro card).
Whatever camera you get, strongly consider Image Stabilization if you get more than 6x optical zoom. When using the long zoom, any slight camera movement is multiplied many times. I.S. greatly reduces any blurring from camera shake.
Good Luck

fujifilm e550. they're like $200 bucks now, and were over twice that 2 years ago. its an unreal camera with really great picture quality, and an awesome zoom. its got actual, and digital zooms.
i can zoom in on a person thats a football field away, and take a pic, and then zoom in so that the whole screen is just their face, and its not even grainy. its unreal. i know people with newer, more expensive cams that are still shocked at my pictures. and i'm not any kind of super photographer or anything.

Kodak Z650 is a 6.1mp camera with a 10x optical zoom. You can't beat it for $299. I have one and it takes amazing pics.

kodak makes an affordable digital camera with two lenses. One is for wide-angle, the other for telephoto and it switches between them seamlessly as you zoom in.
