Recently traveled 200 miles on Amtrak and found the service horrible and the trip boring

It depends very much on the type of train you travel on. Modern trains have very comfortable seats in all passenger cars, and there are sleeping-cars and dining-cars which make even the longest journey enjoyable.
Though we all seem to agree that the future belongs to air transport, the railroads today still carry a lot of passengers and goods. Many people make their choice on travelling by train as with a train you have speed, comfort and pleasure combined. Travelling by train is of course slower than by air but it also has its advantages. Train is the cheap means of travelling.
During your way on the train you can read newspapers, books, look out of the window, drink the tea, communicate with your neighbors or sleep. I prefer to look out of the window, because you can see the country you are passing through, and not only the clouds as when you are flying.

i did once but it was only a 5 hours trip but i had a good time. Its been a few years though. Sorry u had a bad time.

I loved it on Amtrak. It's too bad you didn't like it, but it's not for everyone.

i haven't done amtrak. but otherwise, train (subway, TGV, etc.) is my favorite way to travel
