I'm in the Navy right now. My rate is a Master at Arms and I'm stationed in Bahrain in the Middle East. If you like to travel on a ship then I can tell you what rate NOT to pick. MAA do alot of AntiTerrorism Force Protection so we are mostly a landside rate. There are a few exceptions of course. One rate you might want to look at is CTN. Cryto-Tech Networking. If you like computers it is the most kick-*** job. The Navy pays to send you to all different types of schools to learn to be a government hacker. You hack websites and then provide full detailed reports on how you did it and what you got out of it so that the other Crypto's can beef up the security. It's really cool and fairly new. You need a Top Secret clearance to get in but it's not too hard if you're just getting in. And, in answer to your last question. Nothing will happen to you. You won't get an other than honorable discharge and you definately won't go to jail. They'll try to scare you telling you that you signed a contract and all that stuff but the truth is, you're NOT in the Navy until you graduate bootcamp. Your best bet is to tell your recruiter that you changed your mind. He'll try to scare you into going in, but there's nothing he can do. The papers they have you sign aren't real. They're applications. They'll swear you in when you show up to MEPS. THEN is when you'll sign your contract. Until then, you still have the option to back out. Happens all the time. And people get kicked out of bootcamp all the time too. Nothing happens to them because you aren't in the Navy 'till you graduate bootcamp. So, think about it. It's almost impossible to get out once you get on that bus. So make your decision before it's time for you to go.

As the first 2 posters said, it really is going to depend on what you like to do - the Navy has an expression - Choose your Rate, choose your fate.
For example - if you like to work with computers and are good at detecting patterns and solving puzzles, you could be a Cryptologist. If you like weather patterns, you could be an Aerographer's Mate (weather guesser ;-) ) If you like to build things, be a Seabee...
It's going to depend on your own personal interests and aptitudes.
Here's a link where you can scroll through all the rating badges for the Enlisted Community in the Navy. If you click on the badge it will give you a brief overview of the job.

I was a Machinist's Mate and learned steam plant operation, air conditioning and refrigeration, and cryogenics. Today I am a Stationary Engineer because of my navy training. Your recruiter will be able to translate rates into civilian job descriptions.

That depends on what you like to do, and what you have an aptitude for. But like the first guy to answer said, talk to the recruiter about what rates can translate to in a future civilian job. I mean, Gunner's Mate sounds cool, shooting the big ship's guns, but what would you do with that in the real world?

I was a cryptologic technician and had a blast. If you want to be a spook this is the job for you. Just be prepared to go though a pretty thorough background investigation.
