First of all (to the other answerers), there is no official language in the USA. I promise. I'm working on my PhD in Political Science, and I spend a lot of my time studying the laws of this country. And if there were a law passed making English the official language of the US, it wouldn't have been voted on by the people of this country, as we don't have referenda.

Second (to the asker), I think a few people are confused about your use of "the American continent." In the US, we are taught that there are 7 contitnents and that North America and South America are different continents. However, in many parts of the world, "America" is considered one big continent. I assume that that's how they teach the continents in the part of the world that you're from. In that sense, you are right that the majority of the population of the Americas speaks Spanish.

Now, to answer your question:
There is, of course, the historical reason that the United States of America was founded by English speakers. But I'm sure you know that, and I doubt that's what you were asking about.

The fact, for good or bad, is that most people from the US simply never feel the need to learn Spanish or any other langauge. Many US citizens never travel outside the US in their lifetime, and within most communities in the US, English is the predominant language.

Also, English has become the international language of commerce, again for better or for worse. So, when those US citizens that need to interact with people from other countries for commercial reasons, they find that they can use English and be understood.

Personally, I believe that everyone should speak more than one language for a number of reasons. And because of our geographical location in the world, Spanish is a great choice as a second language. Spanish is taught as an optional second language in most US public schools (but it's not required), so most people from this country have the means to learn it at some point or another. However, most people do not believe that they will have the chance to use it. So, even if they learn it, they might forget it easily.

If truth be known regarding the North American Continent, the majority of the population probably speaks French. However, in the USA, we voted at one time to have a national language and it was to be English, therefore all documents, production, and citizens were to be able to utilize the English language. The continent is made up of three very distinct cultures and three very distinct languages and until the past decade it was not an issue - those who crossed into any of the other cultures either took their chances someone would understand their language or they learned the language of where they were going. However, multi-culturalism (which given time, we will find is an underhanded way of introducing communism into our country) has opened pandora's box of everyone thinking their personal opinions are their personal rights - as opposed to their being rights that are right for all persons - regardless of personal opinion. So, it is that as opposed to "offending" the good consumers of USA, companies have bowed to the need to now provide French, Spanish, and English on goods - which in my personal opinion is ridiculous, has cost companies entirely too much money, and still falls back to the notion that if you want to be a part of the USA and it's economy and lifestyle, then learn its ways, don't expect it to change to yours - otherwise, all of us would have moved into your territory. And no, I'm not the least bit politically correct in my statements or feelings. I am very United States of American in them.
