If you signed the final papers, then you are considered AWOL and the UCMJ governs you - you could be charged with being a deserter and THAT means serious prison time.

The military isn't like signing up at the local burger joint. It means you sign yourself over to serve the government - I broke my leg in basic and got a serious write up - for being careless with government property - ME!

You need to talk to your recruiter RIGHT NOW! If you back out you will be put in cuffs. At best they would make your ability to ever get into college or a good job a living hell - you could be considered a felon in some cases and that is something you really don't need.

On the other hand, Navy is the easiest branch to get through without getting killed. And once you do, you can get college PAID for... and that's something that most people cannot do after working anyplace for 6 years!

When I was in Navy boot camp the drill instructors asked us if anyone wanted to back out on the first day. We actually had one guy who did, so they told him it would take about 2 weeks for the paperwork to go through. It actually took a lot longer for him, but those were unusual circumstances.

If you haven't actually gone to MEPS yet for the final oath, then definitely talk to the recruiter and tell him you want to cancel. It's too bad though. I really enjoyed most of my Navy career, you might have too.

I used to be an MP in the Marines, and it can bring some bad consequences for you. There is some good advice above, if you have changed your mind, then tell them. You can drop on request. They will growl at you, but there are really no teeth in the bite. It's all volunteer, so you should be able to get out of it. Make sure though, because there won't be a second chance.

Nothing, You have every right to change your mind until you sign the final papers at MEPS, but why would you want to since navy boot camp is really easy.

not much. even if you were to wash out at boot camp, the penalties are really quite limited. it is after a period of time in the service that the 'failure to adapt' policy turns into a 'dishonorable discharge' policy.

you may want to give it a try, however, my brother did a stint in the navy and he got to go all over the pacific rim.

I'm in the Dep as well. The only thing that happens is your get other than honorable discharge. No jail. Its not that big a deal. People do it. It would just hurt your chances of joining any service again, other than army.

If you haven't taken the oath yet you can back out of the contract.

What changed your mind? Serving in the military is something everyone should do, at least for a little while.
