The air in the bag acts as a cushion to prevent breakage of the chip during shipment. The air in the bag also allows the chips to move freely within the bag and prevent them from being crushed by another box being stacked on top or the box being dropped.

The reason so much air is in the bag is so the chips won't break during shipping.
If they would lay bags of chips on top each other with not enough air in the bags, then the weight from the bags on top would crush the chips on the bottom. The air in the bag protects them.

Chips are sold by weight, not volume. When the chips are bagged, there's extra air in the bag to help keep them from being crumbs by the time they make it to you. They also settle some because of all the shaking around they do.

Without the air in the bag to cushion the chips they would all be crushed and then you would be complaining about why are the chips all smashed up when you open up the bag! It's always something.

they want you to think its for purposes of transport. Generally when the bags are tossed around, if they are filled to the brim, they might bust. There is a better seal if there is some room left in the bag. But if its only half way full, thats going too far.

Potato chips and other snacks like them, are sold by weight, not the amount of the product.

Plus during shipment, some of the product settles or breaks up into smaller pieces, which take less space.

If they didn't have so much air in the bags, when shipped in the big trucks crammed in boxes with other chip bags, all the chips would crunch together and you'd just wind up with crumbs.

Transporting food can be tricky, the extra air provides cushioning so the food doesn't get destoyed. When the companys fill the bags of chips, it takes sometime before they settle.

OMG! That is the most frustrating thing EVER! I buy chips, seeds...and beef jerky is the worst. It's like 5,000 a bag, and only 2 pieces. I know it is for safe transporting reasons but gah! They can at least lower the price.

The bags are filled with nitrogen (odorless and colorless) to preserve freshness and prevent the chips from getting crunched or broken during transportation. This is why they are sold by their weight, and not by thier volume.
