2 to 3 weeks depending how bad (1-2 weeks to heal up, 3 to go away completely to the point where you can't see it). Depending how bad you have it, you might need to see a doctor to get some Prednisone (a steroid to speed up your immune system and fight it off), although I suggest you see a doctor to get it anyway, even if it's not that bad. In the mean time, DO NOT SCRATCH IT. Sounds hard and it feels so nice to scratch it, but try as hard as you can not to, it will spread that way, it can also scab and scar. Keep covering it in calamine lotion and Betadyne (that stuff that turns your skin orange) to dry it up and relieve the itching, but leave it open to air as much as you can, don't cover it up with Ace wraps or bandages. The puss is what's contagious and can cause it to spread, so you gotta keep that cleaned up and dried out. Keep taking Benadryl every 4 to 6 hours as well to keep your system fighting it off. It's ok to take Benadryl and Prednisone at the same time, but you can't forget to take the Prednisone or stop taking doses, you need to wean yourself off of it over time.

If you can't get to a doctor yet, take an oatmeal bath to try and help dry it up and relieve the itching. I haven't tried that personally, I just stick to the calamine lotion, Betadyne, Prednisone and Benadryl. It will still take time though. I also see people saying something about a shot. I haven't gotten that either, my doctor never mentioned anything to me about a shot, but maybe I was just too bad by then and the Prednisone was better. But call your doctor and ask.

Good luck!! It'll all be ok!

I am battling poison ivy right now and I am on day 12. It has finally stopped itching constantly, it still itches but just not all the time, I have been using Calamine lotion, Benadryl Cream and Hydrocortisone. I have found the Calamine to be the very Best so far. I still have the rashes some are blisters and others are big patches, I have a rather large patch on my lower back that got worse because its in my belt line and every pair of pants rubs across it all day long :( . I have kept it pretty contained by being diligent with the calamine. I hope to see this healing up sometime soon.

Yes. It spreads when it is touched, and what ever touched it, if not cleaned, touches a different spot, it can be placed there. Think of it like pollen- but the pollen only needs your body to produce. To stop the itch, run it under hot water and get it to steamy, then shock it with cold water. As long as you don't bother it too much afterwards, it shouldn't itch again.

it jsut depends on how bad you have it but for me it lasted maybe 1-3 weeks ...i cant remeber! but i did find a really great trick to stop it from iching and it helps it heal faster.....use baking soda and make a paste from it with water....then rub it on the rash and when it sits there for maybe a min. it will start to stop iching....i hope it works for you!!!!
