Look for a cat food that is high in meat (cats are carnivores, grains are no good), and do not contain Wheat, Corn, or Soy. These cause bad allergies in cats, which sometimes lead to poor coat, behavioral problems, and sometimes CANCER.
Purina = Corn Glutein Meal = BAD
Nutro = Soy Protein = Bad
I feed and recommend Nature's Variety. Their canned diets are 95% meat, and super high quality. Their dry food is good as well. I'm feeding Salmon & Brown Rice to my cat, and she loves it.
I switched her from Nutro about 6 months ago, and there's a HUGE difference! She's 9, and she runs around like a kitten again, and is purring all the time.
BONUS: Her poop doesn't smell as bad.
NUTRO = STINKY POOP!!!
Anyway, check them out. www.naturesvariety.com. I'm sure they can hook you up with some free samples. It's not the cheapest food out there (like Alley Cat, $4 for a 20lb Bag), but you really do get what you pay for...
Hope this helps...

We buy Science Diet on the advice of our vet. Our last cat had Iams, but on the Science Diet our new kitten is thriving and his coat is shiny. SD being much better!
We go to a discount store to get is fav. flavor by the case, Oceanfish for Kittens. Then we also feed the Kitten and/or Indoor Cat formula. He was getting kind of chubby on the dry kitten food, so we cut it back and added Indoor Formula.
We had him on cheaper stuff like Whiskahs but the litterbox reeked!!!!! I feel a good quality food is well worth it! We pay $17 for a case of the Science Diet wet food.
He still gets a can a day of wet food and here and there a treat of some human-food like turkey or tuna *but not much.*

You're spending alot of money on a cat, unless it's a give away and you want to save money buying supermarket food? I don't get it. The cheaper the food, the more fillers like corn and by-products are in it. Your cat will have crappy fur and poop tons, and the smell..whew...I buy Eukanuba...I pay alot for it but it lasts much longer as the cats don't need to eat as much of it to feel full as they do with crap like Purina, Happy Cat ..The cheaper the food the cheaper the quality which will affect your cats long term health. If you had a kid, would you serve them McDonald's everyday to save money and time? Why should cats, or any pet for that matter, suffer health wise because of your purse strings..Read the labels if the first ingredient is corn, skip it and find one that states chicken, beef etc

Are you getting a kitten or an adult cat? I have a one yr old and a four yr old cat. I feed them Natural choice, and it’s made by Nutro Products. They help w/ shedding, digestive tracks, etc. You can only buy them @ PetSmart or Petco that I know of. If you feed your cat the real cheep stuff he/she will fill up its litter box faster than you can empty it. Not just that its going to be runny, not hard and firm. Considering what type of cat your getting your going to mess that cat up. It’s going to look nasty. The fur will not look shiny or full. It will be shedding all the time and have fur balls. What you put into the cat will result in what the cats appearance will look like, including its general attitude also.

I give my cats Meow Mix (different varieties) 2 times a day and 9 Lives wet food 3 times a week along with their dry food. I pay $8 for an 18 pound bag of dry food and $1 for a pack of canned wet food.

I have 2 cats, one outdoor and one indoor. The outdoor cat is 1 1/2 yrs. and gets Purina Cat Chow, and the other is 9 and gets Iams Indoor Hairball formula in the pink bag (it's actually for seniors). Both cats have shiny coats and are very healthy.
The reason I get two different kinds is because the older cat needs more nutrients than the Purina Senior formula can give her and she's had problems with hairballs before. The Iams is $14 for an 8 lb. bag, but it's worth it. The Iams keeps her poop from stinking in the litter box and fills her up better than Cat Chow.
You can find Iams at Wal-Mart, PetSmart, and Petco. They have kitten, adult, senior, multi-cat and weight control formulas.
P.S. My vet told me not to feed the cats canned food - it will stick to their teeth and rot them like sugar does to a human's teeth. Dry cat food cleans their teeth just fine. And don't buy treats for the cat either - it's just added calories that they don't need (from the vet also).

If you can't afford to feed it well , Why are you buying an expensive cat. That's like buying a expensive gas guzzling trunk and complaining about the Gas prices. How about Vet Bills, that's the most costly part of owning an animal.Cat's don't eat that much,it's not like you're getting a Great Dane P.S We feed her I AM S as recommened by the vet.You can buy it at Jewel, she seems to like it.
