Wow. I didn't know this question needed asking until I read some of the answers. Have a little respect, people! In a nutshell, an atheist disbelieves in a god of any kind. This is an active disbelief. If one just doesn't know or hasn't found a faith yet but is open to the idea, they're an agnostic.

A pagan is a believer in a non Abrahamic religion- i.e. not Christian, Jewish, or Muslim. Some limit this to include only earth centered religions and exclude the darker paths like Satanism, believe it or not. Most pagans and Satanists don't hang out together or agree on very much. (I get along with both sets just fine, personally.) But anyway- the origin of the word Pagan is up for debate, but comes from (most likely) either the Latin word "paganus" meaning of the country, in other words a worshipper of a religion other than that of the state; or a term referring to someone who followed the local religion of the pagus. Either way this word refers to a follower of localised or rustic deities, and an atheist follows no deities at all.

Pagans are people who lived to far from a city or town to go to a church. and used what they worked with to build a religion of their own. mostly they were farmers when cities started to be built. The Hebrew Torah gives specfic instructions on what they can and cannot eat if they need to stay in a pagans house.
An atheist is a person who does not believe in a higher power. life is an accident which has no meaning.

Pagan is a catagory of religon where people believe in something other than the Christian God. Wicca is a very popular pagan belief in which nature itself is worshiped. There are no strict codes or rules and it is your choice to practice alone or in a coven (a congrigation of sorts). There are many many pagan belief systems.

Athieism on the other hand is the complete absence of spiritual belief structures. In general they believe only in what they can see and prove. They believe there is no god, there is no satan, there is no heaven and hell.

FYI, there is another group of people who do not fall into the mainstream belief systems. They are Agnostics. These are people who neither believe nor disbelieve in a structured religon. They are essentially "waiting for proof" one way or another.

Pagans are any people who worship a god other than the Christian God.

Atheists do not believe in a god.

Agnostics just aren't sure.

Pagans see God in nature, but they do not recognize the Creator. Atheists are just angry, non- believers. They believe in nothing. Kind of like Seinfeld's show, it all about "nothing" to an atheist. Peace be with you....

People that are atheist believe in no higher power, be it god, allah, or what have you. Paganism is a term generally used (incorrectly I might add) to describe any belief system that does not recognize one god, and is typically not Christian.

I don't know how you could ever get the two confused. Pagans believein many gods, and atheist don't believe in any gods. It's really very simple.
