What is the purpose of companies adding MSG into products? It is so bad for us and I hate that some of my favourite snacks have it.

Yes theodorous, you are right, I should eat an apple instead and lots of times I do, I eat fairly healthy but now and then I love to snack on things that maybe aren't great for me. That's how I am and I'm not gonna change unless I gain weight.
Now a question for "Ice", you said w/o it, my fav foods wouldn't taste good, so how come when i buy chips from organic health food stores that don't have msg, they still taste good? I don't get it ...

They add it because it is a "flavor enhancer." I can't take any MSG without getting sick for three days at least. It's in every brand of soup., broth, any flavored chips. It's a nightmare to shop for food without MSG. It's often disguised as HVP (Hydrolized Vegetable Protein). You'd think they'd have eliminated it. It does, like salt, make food taste better, and food companies want that and won't stop if no one makes them.
Some restaurants to this day have no clue what it is either and can't answer either way when you ask if they use it. I know not to eat in such places when they say "wha?"

It's a flavor enhancer. Without it, your favorite foods wouldn't taste like your favorite foods anymore. Why is there an attitude that everything must be eliminated. We are supposed to be the most intelligent life on the planet, but we can't say, "Well, that snack has MSG in it. I don't think I'll eat the entire freaking bag this time."

It's a sad statement when the only way you can control yourself is by making a rule that it can't be in there anymore.

It's a flavor enhancer. It does this by irritating the taste buds making them more sensitive to tastes similar to salt. Some people are allergic to MSG and end up at emergency.
