It is very important for most birds. Not only does cuttlebone ( From the cuttlefish, a type of squid with a short, wide body) contains calcium, but it also contains trace amounts of minerals important to a bird's system. The calcium is important for the lovebird's bones and if you have a hen who is prone to egg laying or is breeding, the cuttlebone keeps a steady supply if calcium in her system. Cuttlebone is also excellent for keeping a bird entertained as they will treat it like a toy. It is easy to tear apart and its better that a lovebird have that to destroy than someone's table :-) . It's also supposed to be good for birds' beaks. Parrots use cuttlebone to keep their beaks trimmed and in proper condition.

The correct term is cuttlebone- it is the skeleton of the cuttlefish (a squid.) Lovebirds and other parrots do benefit from having a cuttlebone or a mineral block in their cage, especailly if it is an egg-laying female (extra calcium.) Personally, I give my birds a calcium enriched diet, and they have never bothered with the cuttlebones I have given them. They are cheap enough - try and see if your bird will nibble on it.

The word is cuttlebone. I do give it to my lovebirds. It contains calcium and minerals that they may not get otherwise. It also helps to trim their beaks and their nails naturally. It also comes in flavors purchased from catalogs or pet supply stores. My birds do chew at it. It also comes in different sizes.

Why yes, they do. If your lovebirds do not eat or bother with the cuttlebone, then scrape some off into it's food. It is very healthy and is highly recommended.

Yes, because you don't want their beaks to get overgrown so they won't be able to eat.
