First of all, let me start by saying that porn and dirty magazines are illegal to send through the mail. So are cigarettes. This is usually the first things that people list for this question.
Ask him what he wants/needs. That's always a good place to start.
Any type of quick foods that can be mailed....jerky, chips, crackers, candy, etc. Vienna sausages and individual cans of tuna. Also, send Gatorade, Kool aid, tea, lemonade, etc. They get tired of drinking plain water all the time. If you can, find the individual drink packets he can add right to his water bottle.
He'll also enjoy magazines and newspapers. Puzzles and puzzle books are appreciated over there as well.
If he has access, send him DVD's or videos. Check with him and see if he can use them. Many bring equipment like that with them. Also, send CD's or tapes.
Send him lots of mail....letters and postcards. Be sure to include pictures!!
He'll also need plenty of toiletries. Shampoo, deodorant, razor blades, toilet paper, wet wipes or baby wipes and so on are always in need.
I don't know if it's still a problem, but be careful what you list on the shipping label you have to attach. Last time my hubby went, inspectors often took things of value out of the boxes. Sad, but honest. Just send him things to make him comfortable and not miss home so much. Don't send things that melt or are perishable.

My husband found that he could buy almost everything he needed but there were some things he really appreciated, which included. Clean handkerchiefs which you have ironed ...they smell of home :), socks...my husband went through several pairs a day, Immodium (sorry, gruesome but they all get upset stomachs and you know what men are for not going to The MO?) If he has taken a CD player, get him a new CD, they get very bored with the ones they took with them. A book which he would be interested in, the latest copy of the magazine he takes at home...something to do with Athletics in my husbands case, anything he likes to eat which is not perishable in the heat, and letters...lots of letters. Top tip...because there are weight restrictions on parcels, and you are never quite sure when they will get there. if he is having his birthday or Christmas there, send a little gift in each package to open on the day. My husband had quite a haul on Christmas day. He opened them whilst he was on the phone to us...much weeping! :)

I was there and i can honestly say things like ( smart pop popcorn " this stuff is the best", deodorant, body-wash, gold bond powder, toothpaste & new toothbrush, q-tips, AA batteries, pics of home, nail clippers, new magazines!!! lots of this stuff is in short supply depending where he is. I was in camp bucca and the BX/PX there was soooo small and didnt have much. One other thing//// if he smokes then get him some, also cause they run out as well over there"especially the menthol ones". lets see what else?? how about video games and stuff, i dont know if your friend is in to that type of stuff, but if they are, then hook em up, cause its so freaking boaring over there. All i did over there on my small amount of time off was go to the gym and play video games and movies. It is very important to send little things every now and them cause the hardest thing to fight over there is lonelyness and being board, plus it will let them know that you are thinking of them. Ohhhh and dont forget to put a letter in the package, yes us military people like to read ya know??

Things from home. I don't mean just things from the U.S., but things from your friend's home - like chocolate if he's from Hershey, Pennsylvania or cheese if she's from Wisconsin. A person in a far away place feels pride about things from their home. They'll be most proud sharing with their mates something that says "here's the best you've ever had." Every community has something that says home; find out what that is and make their day!

Hard candy (nothing that will melt).
Magazines
and another good thing would be this.
When I was over there my Aunt went to a local elementary school and got one the teachers to let her students write letters and draw pics for us and my aunt sent them over.
That was prob the best thing me or the other guys got while being the desert.

While you can send almost anything, here are a few things not to send. Chocolate, Liquid, Soap, anything flammable. These things tend to cause problems and usually are thrown away.

Wow, Brwerfan -- That Hershey's chocolate ought to be real good in the 135 degree heat our guys are enduring right now (fact). Your intentions are good. God bless you!
