I thik you may be better off dying it at home & having the salon highlight it. Usually if you have both done at the salon, they will highlight it right after they dye it. It takes a l-o-n-g time. the reason I say do it that way is because it is easier to dye hair than it is to highlight it nicely. The highlights will match closer to the color on the box the closer your hair color is to the base color on the box. There is a brand out there that sells both base dye & high/lowlights in one box. I have friends that have usesd it & I get both positive & negative opinions on it. Prob more pos than neg, but close. Good luck whatever you decide to do! I'm sure if you like it other people will too! Even if you don't though I bet other people will....

Doing highlights yourself can be tricky & you can never be sure of the results. Just because they look one way on the box does not mean that that's how your hair will look. Your best bet is to have it done by a professional who knows exactly what she's doing. She'll also be able to give you the color highlights that you want, weather you want them darker or lighter of what the box would have given you

i am hairdresser, it all depends on what colour you are having it dyed at the salon as to how well highlights will come up. What is your brand of diy highlight kit? The darker hair is the harder to lighten without going orange or yellow. Much safer option is to have all done together by proffessionals. Also if it is a comb on lightener it may touch other hair and cause light blobs where not wanted.

Yes you can still have your hair highlited after you color it yourself. But the salon might make you sign a chemical waiver for using home (box) color in your hair.
Rule # 1 in color theory: Color does not lift color. Once you go darker, no blond dye (color) is gonna lift the dark brown color, anymore. You will be stuck with the dark color you put in your hair until it fades or grows out. So pick something that is no more than 2 shades darker than your natural level. If your hair is naturally blond dont pick ash tones, your hair might turn into an ugly greenish hue. Its wise to ask a hairdresser to find out what your natural level is. Highlites are done with hair bleach. Don't do them at home, ALWAYS trust an educated professional. You might regret it otherwise.

I am a licensed cosmetologist and I say you should color first then put highlights on. don't do it yourself because,I think it would be better to go have it done. because, you must leave the highlights on the correct time to get passed the orange stage. in highlighting there are many hair levels the hair goes through. but, leaving it on too long will make it white and damage it! ( don't do it yourself!)

Go to a professional. I dye my friend's hair very dark golden brown and scatter blonde hightlights throughout it. Do not do this at home!!! It's very easy to screw up if you don't know what you're doing and a highlighting kit from Wal-Mart will never give you the results you get with professional products.

Of course u can. The colour will vary, due to the natural colour of your hair. As for the Highlights, depending on how long u leave the wraps in, will depend on how light the colour will turn out. As fot the "darker/lighter - it depends on your "natural colour".

yeah thats what i got done to my hair! what you want to do is have it "low-lighted" with a darker color per say than your natural color and then get the highlighted streaks in it! but if your looking to have like this all-highlighter hair color than i wouldnt bother with the low-lights.

you can still highlight it...but i suggest letting the salon do it... and tell them what you want exactly...they might even cut you a deal for doing both there... the color on the box is not always right...

Dunno. That stuff kills your hair though. I put three highlighted streaks in the front like Lindsey Lohan and that looks damned good and it isn't ruing my hair which is all thick and luxurious so I wouldn't want to do that! And just so you know no one can really properly answer your question cause we do not know what colour your hair is. What colour you want to dye it, or what colour you want the highlights to be! More specifics. Better answers.
