I had my first Hepatitis shot in 2003, and failed to go back a month later for the 2nd shot. In February 2006, i went to the health clinic to continue my shots. The health clinic told me it was fine to proceed with the 2nd shot, even though i had had my 1st shot 3 years earlier. Will the vaccination still be effective??

I believe you will have to restart the series of shots over again. Starting again with #1.

The second shot is like a booster. Usually the first shot alone is not enough to protect you from Hepatitis B, so the second one boosts your immunity and usually is enough. After the second shot you should have your blood tested to see if you are immune. Some people need to have a total of 3 Hepatitis shots to be protected. The health department may suggest that you just go ahead and get shot number 3 to save you from having a blood test and then possibly needing shot number 3 anyway. So the short answer - the first shot was never effective by itself.

What should be done if there is an interruption between doses of hepatitis B vaccine?
If the vaccination series is interrupted after the first dose, the second dose should be administered as soon as possible. The second and third doses should be separated by an interval of at least 2 months. If only the third dose is delayed, it should be administered when convenient.

It is my understanding that its important to get the shots in there proper sequence. There is a blood test that can be done after the shots are completed to see if you have the antibodies needed to protect you from Hep B. I would request the test after your last shot, Just to make sure.

I do believe you will have to re take the first shot. However, I believe there is a time frame you have to wait prior to doing so.
