Check out craft stores for items that catch your eye and spark creation! Pick up cheap mirrors at garage sales, second hand stores or dollar discount stores even. You can dress up mirrors or other items quite cheap and originally this way. Something to try to your taste may be to take bamboo from a craft store and cut to fit it around a skinny pole of a lamp. Make up a lamp shade to go with it.
I have done a colorful neon green and zebra theme in my bedroom very thrifty this way! I found my zebra candle holders in the dollar section at target and most other items at dollar stores. Just be ware of some of the cheap/cheesy looking items you find at dollar stores, some are terrible! I was able to re paint a zebra themed mirror from a dollar store and now love it so it was worth the $5 try! I used black and white mini fur strands from a craft store weaved together to dress up some lamp shades I already had. I painted the fronts of an older worn looking dresser drawer fronts to fit my theme as well.
Look around and absorb ideas of what you would like and re create them for yourself.
As for African paintings if your not set on having a true painting, you can find prints almost anywhere but a good place to try would be a print shop in a mall or look for pre-framed art prints at wal-mart, target, K-mart, discount stores...anywhere like that may have what your looking for at great prices!
Good Luck and have fun with this!

Don't forget to check out the second hand stores. A Second Look is a good place to start. Look in the yellow pages under 'consignment' or 'used'. Check them out every week or so since the merchandise changes often. Look into posters.com and wallart.com for great art. If you found a print you really liked consider mounting it on a piece of wood and using bamboo as a accent. Also, check your local discount fabric store. Add animal prints or jungle foliage prints around the room as accents. Don't forget Cost Plus World Market....masks and wood carvings would add another texture. Have fun!!!!
