it's more of an artificial means of showing intelligence. An attempt to deceive those, into thinking they are knowledgeable.

To Poppet: Wittiness and smarta$$ are two seperate things. Wittiness shows intelligence, while smarta$$ness shows a false sense of intelligence(putting down others to make yourself feel smart). I can't really reply to your comment, due it's silly logic and useless rhetoric.

Most people that attempt this type of act simply have very low self esteem, they can't be them self's so they act out something they are not they do this for praise, they get a false sense of I am OK, they become a vary manipulative person and they do not stay in a relationship for long, and if they do it becomes a vary dysfunctional relationship and has nothing to do with knowledge or Intelligence.

Inorder to be witty one must be "sharp", as in, intelligent. To be a true "smarta**" you have to be aware of your situation, aware of those around you, and aware of the degree of intelligence you can present within your witticism.
Now there are different degrees of intelligence...book smart, street smart, and natural smart. Within those various forms of intelligence, you're going to get different wit.
Wittiness is not a "bad" thing...it of course can be over-done, just as with all things, but it is not a character flaw, a show of ignorance, or a show of lack of "self".
So I suppose the real question is this...what is YOUR issue with a smarta**...and if it's just not your cup of tea, then don't make grandiose statements that you can't hold up to.
