how does straightening hair chemically work on a molecular scale?

the chemicals in the relaxer breaks certain bonds in the hair which causes them to weaken & enable the hair to take on a new form (this is also true for perms). Once the bonds are broken & the hair reformed the neutralizer is applied. What that does is it reforms the broken bonds so that the hair is locked in it's new form.
