Vinyl tile or sheet vinyl would be a very practical choice. It comes in many different colors and is easy to keep looking nice. Clean up of WHATEVER the kids want to mess up the floor with is pretty easy, much easier than the care a wood floor demands. You could then let each kid choose a little throw rug to put beside their bed for cold mornings!

They have these foam and rubber tiles that lock together for kids rooms these days. You can get them in most home furnishing stores I believe. They are great cause:
1. They can be removed to clean.
2. They are soft so your kids can play without getting hurt.
3. They are very colorful, kids love lots of color.

You can try those do-it-yourself wood floors. They are very popular and not too expensive. You can find them at Sam's Club or Costco.

My brother-in-law just added some to his house, and all the kids helped....it was a fun family project for them.
