In most of Canada, an "advanced green" flashes, An advanced green means that you have a green, but the oncoming traffic is red. You have the right of way to turn left, right, or straight. The traffic signage says "Advanced Green When Flashing".

(Except in Vancouver BC, where flashing green lights mean something else - I haven't a clue).

Nowadays, this is seen less. It is being replaced by simultaneous turn signals, i.e. both you and oncoming traffic have a left-turn-green-arrow, meaning you can both turn left (right of way) but cannot go straight.

You'll probably see advanced green at an intersection where there's a lot more traffic one way than the other, typically. Some Toronto intersections, the advanced green alternates sides (i.e. northbound one light, southbound the next) or changes direction depending on the flow of rush hour traffic.

Its when your light turns green first, but the other direction stays red. Ever notice on one side it may say "wait for green"?
