I had a great time in college and did very well in classes. Here are my tips:
1. Take advantage of the class syllabus (schedule of topics). Most classes have these and if you know what you will be learning ahead of time, you can browse your text book and get an early grasp of what you will be focusing on.
2. Don't wait until the last minute to study for an exam. Take a few minutes each night after a class to go over what you have learned. Cramming will be necessary sometimes, but if you study a little all along, it won't be nearly as difficult come test day.
3. Find a friend who is in the same degree program as you. Chances are you will have classes together so if you are sick or need a study buddy, you'll have one.
4. When choosing classes that are not in your degree program (you'll have to take several) find something you will enjoy or have a genuine interest in. It will make the time fly by!
5. Don't get caught up in too many parties. You will need time to relax and they can be loads of fun, but don't make it your nightly or even weekly routine.
6. Ask Questions and get to know your professors. They appreciate your interest and are usually very personable and ready to help. When you get in your degree program, they can also be a great reference later on when you are looking for your first job out of college.
7. MAKE TIME FOR YOU! Find ways to relax, even if it means going for a walk with a friend or going to the movies.
8. Get plenty of sleep and exercise. These will help keep you healthy and motivated to learn. You will find yourself getting sick less often if you do these.
9. Make sure you are eating properly. It is sometimes so crazy in college you might find you don't have time for a proper meal or you are stuck in the dorm. Make sure you keep healthy foods in your fridge to snack on so you don't fall prey to the weight gain or stress eating of college.
I know that sounds like a lot, but I've learned they really make a difference! If you have any more questions, email me!

The first step, as someone else said above, is choose classes you'll like. However, you can find fun classes in your major and in your general ed classes. You do have a choice of which class in each category to choose. Pick the ones you'll like the most!
For example, for humanities, I chose Art History. I learned more about the history of the world through images and sculptures than I would have by reading a standard textbook.
For social sciences, I chose cultural anthropology. I learned a lot about different people all over the world, as well as how language is so important to our cultures.
For physical sciences, I chose Astronomy, because I always dreamed of being a space traveller. I also chose physical anthropology because you learn about the processes of how people came into being and how people originally spread throughout the world.
I have had a blast in college. Go in with the attitude that you're going to learn stuff, not to be in a popularity contest or to get laid.
Also, some classroom tips: sit as close to the front of the class as you can. It does NOT cause the teacher to call on you more. If anything, it's the slackers in the back who get called on more. AND write everything the teacher says and writes on the board down in your notebook. 85% of my professors do their testing based on lectures and most of the questions come from the lecture.
Lastly, as someone said above, apply for financial aid. Even if you don't think you'll qualify! It's free to apply and you might get a few bucks or more!
Good luck!

I agree with Jen's answer, it is very thorough and well written..... Having been a victim of guideline #5, go to parties, enjoy yourself, just do it in moderation. You only live once, make the most of the opportunity and make the opportunity help you in future success. Also be certain to apply for (if you haven't already shame on you) as MUCH financial aid that you can afford to pay back. If your parent's are helping out, AWESOME!!! Look for grants and scholarships, fellowships, ie: stuff that is not a loan and will not need to be paid back!!! I'm a recent college grad and the new student loan changes have impacted my interest rates dramatically, so study hard, plan ahead and good luck!!

Hit the books hard; it is the base for later on.
Dont drink and socialize too much; plenty of time for that later on. That is most of the reason so many flunk out the first year, which means the rest of your life sucks.
