Write. Write a lot. Even just five minutes a day keeps the ideas flowing and makes you more comfortable with the process and your own style.

To hone your skills, attend a class or workshop, join a writer's circle/club, and/or go to coffee house open mic nights to read your stories (or parts of them) and get feedback from people when you sit down.

Also, you could go to a thrift shop and buy an old textbook on creative writing or college composition.

Good luck!

Depends upon what level you are writing at now. If you're a rookie at it, I would activate all the Spell Check features in Microsoft Word and start banging away. You can have Word check for grammer and for style. There's even a box that you can flag that will show you the readability statistics of your document. In Word, select Tools, Options, Spelling and Grammer.
