Bounce it. But there's really no reason to avoid buying brand new balls! If in doubt, give it to the children down the street and take a day off from work to play with your new golf balls!

The only quick and dirty test I can think of would be to take an identical ball of the same manufacturer and drop the balls side by side and see if the ball in question bounces as high. I would have to think that the material that golf ball covers are made of these days would not absorb water... at least not for a very long time. well a simple test i know is to put backspin on the ball while bouncing it. if the ball is of good quality, it will bounce straight back. if not, it will bounce up or to either side. hope that helps!
