I am trying to come up with a homemade hair conditioner. I am already planning to use mayo and lemon, does vinegar have any benefits or bad effects on hair? My hair has been chemical treated (bleached highlights) and it gets dried out easily. Any other household products good for hair???

I was reading one of those 101 beauty tips magazines once, and it said that vinegar is great for getting rid of dandruff and also adding great shine to hair. It said that white vinegar should be used on light hair, and brown( or apple cider) vinegar should be used on dark hair. Since I had a slight dandruff problem myself, I decided to try it and it actually worked. My hair was also shinier and I did not suffer any side-effects from it. As far as conditioning goes....I've heard that eggs are also good for deep-conditioning. My friend uses the mayo treatment and she swears by it.

I don't believe any household products are good on bleached hair. You really really need a good salon conditioner. Vinegar should never be used on blond. It should only be used on dark hair. It is good for rinsing out shampoo before using a conditioner. The same with lemon juice, but it should be used on blond. I know that salon products are pricey (I became a hairdresser to support my hair habit 23 years ago), but you use such a small amount of them compared to store bought products, that the price evens out in the end. I hope this helps.

This reminds me of something I read in a magazine several years ago. Maple syrup is good for the hair because it will fix the split ends and Mayonnaise is a good facial. When my daughter (age 7 then) came home with her new friend I decided to give it a try. I walked into her room with a bottle of syrup and a bottle of mayonnaise. I poured the syrup over my head and then, using a spatula, spread mayonnaise all over my face. After 20 minutes I washed it all off. Oh, my daughter's new friend never came over again. It gave my daughter something to talk about though because she likes to tell her friends that her mother is crazy. It was kind of funny and we still laugh about it to this day.
Oh by the way doesn't mayonnaise already contain vinegar?

Vinegar has a lot of acid and it will strip your hair as well as make it stink.
A good conditioner ( and believe me I ahve tried a lot) is ENJOY hair MASK. you get at beauty supply, its thick and I u se it all the time, I am in the water and sun so it helps mine from drying out,
Paul mitchell products are drying.

Yes, it does affect your hair, but in a good way. Vinegar does smell, but if mixed correctly (i.e. small portion vinegar, large portion of water...unfortunately, I can't think of the correct measurements) it cleans the hair thoroughly of any residual products (i.e. hair grease, gel, shampoo, conditioner, etc.) and leaves your hair shiny & healthy looking. In the past, I have used apple cider vinegar and was really pleased w/ the results.
