Well, the folks on here are trying to make it simple, it is usually more complex than that. You know that if you say anything along those lines, it might cause him to ask questions as to the why and when etc.. so be prepared.

You very kindly ask him to meet you somewhere and you tell him in person that things have changed and so have your feelings and you would like to break up.
DON'T tell him that you want to "be friends" cause that never works.
If you can, please find something you can say that is really nice and that will make him not feel bad, but don't leave the door open to a possible resumption of the relationship if it is dead.

Just tell him that you don't think that the relationship is working out. Tell him that it's just not fair for him to stay in the relationship with you because your heart isn't into it anymore. Act like it's all about him.

Be honest with him. It'll be better for both of you. If you can't do it in person so what. Just tell him it's not working and you just want to be single for a bit.
