As for me, I prefer larger brushes, because i paint abstractly, but most of the time i go over it with smaller brushes for detail. It all depends on how you feel, when you are painting a picture, go with what YOU want. After all you are the creator.

It depends on the size of watercolour paper, small one requires small and large ones require large. If painting A4 size, use small brushes (not the smallest one) to paint. More smaller ones are good for painting more details.

Depends on what area are you working on.
Background like skies, sunset, hills usually requires thick brushes since you want to create smooth surface. Imagine having to use fine, thin brushes and having to repeat layers after layers..tedious, isn't it?
As for the small brush, in contrary to the thick brush is a good tool for the foreground like the twigs, leaf, birds flying from a far, grass, etc.

The best advice is "Use the biggest brush that you feel comfortable holding". A good brush will keep its point so you can still create detail, but you don't have to keep dipping.... with a big brush you just dip once and keep on painting.
