John is one of five New Testament writers (along with Matthew, Mark, Luke, and to a small extent, Paul) who record the sayings of Jesus. These writings give us a consistent account of Jesus' declared purpose.

To accept anything at all that Jesus said, you must accept the accuracy of the writers' accounts. Otherwise you are just wasting your time.

Jesus said, John 15:13Greater love hath no man than this,that a man lay down his life for his friends.

When Mary of Bethany anointed Jesus she was admonished by the disciples. John 12:7 Jesus said Let her alone, against the day of my burying hath she kept this.For the poor always ye have with you;but me ye have not always.

Here's the clincher

John 10 vs 17 & 18
THEREFORE DOTH MY FATHER LOVE ME, BECAUSE I LAY DOWN MY LIFE, THAT I MIGHT TAKE IT AGAIN.

NO MAN TAKE IT FROM ME,BUT I LAY IT DOWN, AND I HAVE THE POWER TO TO TAKE IT AGAIN.

THIS COMMANDMENT I HAVE RECEIVED OF THE FATHER.

As someone else pointed out, Jesus said, oh God, why has thou forsaken me?' This statement shows that Jesus did not want to die. But I think he allowed it when he realised he couldnt escape. He had too much pride to agree with the Jews, which would have saved his life. He knew he spoke the truth, but I dont think he said he would die for our sins. I think his life was more about leading by example, rather than saying we could sin as much as we like and as long as we ask God for forgiveness, we'll go to heaven.

Yes, Jesus volunteered to sacrifice himself for the sins of the world and it is stated in the Old Testament.

Not the words of the incarnated Son, but the words of the Lord nonetheless...

"All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all
To fall on Him." (Isaiah 53:6)

"As a result of the anguish of His soul,
He will see it and be satisfied;
By His knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will justify the many,
As He will bear their iniquities.

Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great,
And He will divide the booty with the strong;
Because He poured out Himself to death,
And was numbered with the transgressors;
Yet He Himself bore the sin of many,
And interceded for the transgressors." (Isaiah 53:11-12)

As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. (John 10:15) No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. (John 10:18) (both verses are Christ's words, recorded by the apostle John)

Here Christ said he was going to lay down His life for his followers; we have to look elsewhere for the full explanation of why this was necessary--read the entire book of Hebrews for the fullest explanation.

He told his disciples at the last supper that he would be leaving them, so he did know that he was to be their sacrifice. In the garden, he prayed to his father saying that he did not want to do it, but said that no matter what, he ultimately wanted his father's will to come to pass. He could have easily freed himself from the cross, but he chose not to because he knew that his death would save us all and that was his purpose on earth.

No. His father(God) told Mary that. before he made the child within her.
and you are correct John taught and wrote letters expressing his own version of what Jesus said.

It was prophesied in the Old Testament that God would provide the perfect sacrifice... I'm not sure on the versus, but check the Old Testament.
