It's nice to find humor in a bad situation. But don't treat your dog as if he is anything less than before. He will need you more now then ever before. Remember, your dog will never judge you or leave you no matter how bad things get, so don't you leave him. But giving him a funny name can only bring a bit of joy into the situation. Judging from the name you want to give your dog, I think you are a kind and funny person with creativity. Rock on.

Yes, he'll understand, if you're consistent but it'll take some time depending on his age and how long he had his previous name.
However, with the change in name, he might feel the loss of leg even deeper (I'm sure he's smart enough to pick up the reason for change).
There might also be some confusion/sad period as he wonders why you don't call him anymore (by his previous name). Personally, I wouldn't change his name at all just to avoid that period. Seems like unnecessary suffering to me.
But if you think less of him, or pity him, he'll pick up on it. But he'll still love you just the same as always.

You can call it anything you want. Takes a while for the dog to learn a new name. Just don't call him late for dinner, and he'll still slobber the same.
If you call a tail a leg, how many legs will he have?
Answer: 3, calling a tail a leg doesn't make it one.

That's ironic. I have a cat with 3 legs, and we call her tripod.

No, but he will pick up on your attitude towards him as "less than" now that he is handicapped, if you do think less of him. If you love him just the same it won't matter, because he would be able to tell that.

No. Duh! The thing about multisyllabic names is that they get shortened, you just don't want to say all those syllables every time you call his name. If you're ok with "Tri" or "Pod", go for it. If you really want to change his name, I like the name "C'mere." Kind of kills two birds with one stone.

leave his name a is. Teach him to use his tail as the missing leg.
P.S. Don't forget to take him for a drag every now and then.
