From the Industrial Revolution until the early 1960s coal was the most used fuel for heating and industry. This lead to impenetrable smogs - read the first chapter of Bleak House, there's a scene where the smog is indoors!
In 1952 a combination of real fog and this smoke caused "the killer smog" in London, thousands of people died, at one stage visibility was 12 inches.
This lead to the passing of the Clean Air Acts for the whole of the UK, and restrictions on the amount of smoke and its colour. After that fog became no more common in the UK that its climate would suggest.

Don't know where they get these idea's I'm sure. We do have a little fog in November time, but nothing unusual! Someone else on here said its alway's raining?? I wish it would!! We have a drought where I am,and have had for months!! Hardly any rain over the winter months or spring! AND its been very hot here for weeks now!! Instead of listening to tittle- tattle, why don't folk read more about the UK,its weather, its history, and its peoples!! They may just be suprised!!

Too many tele programmes and films are definitely to blame for this stereotype. It rains all the time in Plymouth and I never once saw fog, not in London, Kent or the Midlands either.

I'm in Norfolk and see fog sometimes really early in the morning. Other than that it's pretty rare.

Beats me..... it's more like California today, here just outside Whitby, North Yorkshire.
May it has something to do with images of the London killer fog / smog of 1952

My cousins are from there. They said it rains all the time. Maybe the fog is from the rain.

I am taking a very wild guess.
It is foggy and I think it is cause of the all the lakes.
