As simplistically as possible, the answer is attraction and bonding. Leaving out any spiritual or religious aspect (as you requested), it comes down to chemistry and physics. Some will say biology but it really goes deeper than biology.
What holds matter together (again, remember this is a simplistic answer) are ionic and covalent bonds between atoms and molecules and then a thing called Van Der Wall's forces.
While you may be familiar with the chemical bonding referred to as ionic and covalent, many people aren't aware of Van Der Wall's forces. These forces have to do with attraction rather than bonding. These forces act like magnets do - where opposite poles of magnets attract eachother. A water molecule, H20, is a great example. The hydrogen and oxygen atoms share electrons is such a way that the water molecule has an electronically positive part and an electronically negative part. Due to this positive and negative, water molecules are attracted to each other and "line up" with the positive of one molecule "attaching" itself to the negative of another water molecule. It takes a certain amount of energy to "break down" the attraction of water molecules. The reason I used water molecules is that the human body is made up of something like 80 to 85 percent water. What's true for the body is basically true for the rest of matter. Sorry to be redundant but remember I'm being simplistic.
If you want to step a little beyond simplistic, realize that this is a dynamic system - not a static one as described above. In the dynamic system, the answer is ENERGY. In some cases it takes energy for bonding and attraction to take place. In other cases (i mean chemical reactions) it takes energy to break down bonds and attraction. To use water again as our example, a certain percentage of water is not "holding together". While the main body of water of a lake or pond or even glass of water is static (ie not changing), right at the interface of the water and air, there is a dynamic layer where some hydrogen and oxygen atoms are combining to form water and some water molecules are breaking apart and going back to being individual atoms. Once again this is true of nature as a whole. While this is a more involved or detailed answer than my simplistic one, it still doesn't even cover a tenth of what's going on. But it's a good starting point.

There are nuclear forces that hold the elementary particles together in the Nucleus of an atom, which is necessary to overcome the repulsive force generated by the like electrical charges of the particles. The electrons are held more by electric charge forces, but their alignment and order apparently are also affected by the nuclear forces.
Some people consider the elegance of how all this works to be further proof of a divine creator. But each person must make up their own mind on that point.

This is a technical matter for the physics and biology department. Good luck. There is an answer but it is not just one simple verse long but neither are transistors or computer chips.
I'm just praying that the Master Creator gets to be as efficient as chip makers in his strategy to intervene in the religious wars around the world. Unless he has chosen to let them go and just observe the blood bath like some stupid video game He could change any time He wanted. Sick, Sick, Sick.

If such were the case then it might want to be logical to end that we are waiting to administration God. Why do I say this? it truly is by ability of the easy incontrovertible certainty that folk can administration particular sorts of count number and skill. If God were all of this; then which means that folk can administration God or a minimum of in part seeing that that administration is constrained to this planet or to places that folk have despatched interstellar probes; i.e. Voyager it truly is form of 10 billion miles away now only .04% of the hollow to the nearest action image celeb. confident, especially slow by using skill of interstellar probe criteria yet besides the easy incontrovertible certainty that what Voyager is assessed to be at contemporary because's now no longer interior the image voltaic action image celeb device. i noticed you're an atheist and provide you each and every and each and every of the benefits from a believer with an open recommendations. I spoke decrease back a question perfect to faith, conserving that atheists are only as waiting to giving love as believers. in my view i imagine which incorporates you as a non-believer are more effective blessed than those who denounce you for no longer believing. LOL!! you apart from mght do no longer might want to wish to have self theory in God to keep in mind that clinical coaching is an magnificent present and a device. i'm hoping my theory has helped you to appreciate particularly more effective efficient why some human beings have self theory and far more effective so; why some do no longer. Bless you and keep an open recommendations!

Matter is actually an illusion. Our bodies are actually made of about 80% space. The other 20% are particles which move back and forwards within a magnetic field. These particles move so fast that we appear to be solid objects, sort of like a swarm of bees appearing to be one large entity. These particles are constantly moving, changing, dying and growing, so our bodies are actually dying and being reborn on a microcosmic level all the time. All matter behaves like this. Words and thoughts behave in a similar way, but the vibrations are much finer and more rapid that we are unable to actually see them. I guess what stops our bodies from flying apart is magnetism and consciousness.

creator or no creator, somehting called gravity, not planetary, but the attracting force between atoms, sometimes called the weak force or something like that binds the atoms together. a physics book can give a better explanation of how the weak and strong forces act at the moleculor and atomic levels. a high school text or college level text would work as a good, though not extremely complex source.

All particles of matter have an affinity for other particles of matter, and each in its hierarchical order attract and are attracted in differing orders of strength.
Einstein said that light was energy in motion, and that matter was energy at rest.
So as a spark of light or life, (if I can say that this is what we 'are') we gather more matter to us, in this order (IMHO).
The electrical charge attracts the metals, the metals attract the salt, the salt attracts the water and other minerals. We stick together because we are made of cosmic glue, i.e. matter which likes to attach to other matter.
Just drop a tear on a polished table top, and after trying to spread it a bit, watch how it comes back together.
And when you do 'explode' (as we are all want to do when we are angry) just remember that you are tempting your body to do likewise!
Hang together there!

Actually there is the weak force and maybe a couple of others that might be related that keeps atoms together. Been awhile since I took physics.
I do believe in God and He has created these forces and laws that keep things together. I say this as I figure that may be where you are driving towards.

solids dont spontaniously vaporize. it is said that 80% of the human body is liquid, however we are encapsulated in our skin which is like a bag that contains everything. what you are talking about is basically spontainious combustion and the reason we dont combust is because the earths environment is made up of stable gases and solids that lifeforms can live with. the pressure is not too intense (unless of course you go to the top of a really high mountian or to the depths of the pacific ocean). thats about the most scientific and unsilly answer i can provide you granted that your question was silly to begin with.

Electromagnetic forces.
Just look up atoms and you'll find a variety of forces which attract atoms and molecules together.
(EG. The Weakest of these forces is Van Der Waals Forces.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_der_Waals_force
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intermolecular_forces
Kinetic energy can also affect the rate of bonding between molecular structures as well, hence the variation of matter states (solid, liquid, gas...)
