The first time I caught my pup with a rock in his mouth, i freaked and took it away. Ever since then I've been scared he has been eating rocks. My trainer, however, said that dogs like the feel of rocks in their mouths, and we even had my pup x-rayed and there were no rocks in him. Well since then, my two babies are always bringing in rocks from outside and chewing them, and my first instinct is to take them away because if they swallow them, they will not pass and will need surgery, but my trainer says they are just playing and if you move to take them away, they may swallow them out of reaction or if they know you will take it away. Does anyone have suggestions? We are working on clearing out all the rocks in our back yard, but it is a process (as it was fully landscaped when we bought it.. and you know how puppies are). I watch them very closely but if they like to play with the rocks, I want to let them.... HELP!!! Thanks

Oh no, you hurt your tailbone and your dog chews on rocks. LOL
My 90 lb rottie is constantly chewing on rocks. I get so mad/worried about her!
When I find them, I take them away, and if I see her with them, I tell her to drop it! She does now, but she's not the sharpest knife in the drawer, if you know what I mean.
hehe

Puppies will put everything in their mouths! They are like toddlers...you can't leave them alone for a minute. Rocks are not safe. They can't be digested, and a large one can cause a blockage. They also wear down the teeth really fast. Do your best to keep the pups from picking up rocks by making sure they have lots of fun, safe toys to play with. Play with them and show them how much fun these toys are! If you want the pup to drop the rock, try to show the puppy a treat that you will give him if he drops the rock. Most pups would rather spit out the rock and take the treat.

Oh my goodness - yes! Well she did! Finally broke her, had to watch her all the time. When I'd tell her to stop, she'd hurry and swallow it!
Vet told me that wasn't good, her swallowing rocks - Of course I knew that....
So it was keeping an eye on and saying drop it!
Finally, finally she just chasing lizards now - I figure that's all she's got to do - I love lizards, but what's worse.
P.S. Saw show dog taken into vet - small dog - Vet took x-rays found 48 rocks, had to be surgically removed. The dog got home and ate another rock.

Right Now I wish I paid more attention, but I saw this on the Dog Whisperer:
A Pit Bull mix develops an unhealthy fascination with chewing on rocks.
But you can get it on National Geographic website. It's in their video archives and search for rock dog

No but my husky eat a stick a day. Its her big thing. Has been since the day I got her at 6 weeks old. And she has never chewed on anything other the sticks too.
I don't know what to say to help you other then if your trainer says that they will be ok then I would just watch them very close.

My dog Dutchess, used to eat rocks, what I did was buy a underground fence and put it around the landscaping and she stayed away, the good thing is that she grew out of it when her perm. teeth came in. Good Luck

I don't know what to tell you, but my two year old shih-tzu Buddy loves rocks. He throws them up in the air like a ball, it is so cute. He also takes them in his dog house to play with them. Don't worry, they will not swallow them. My dog hasn't in 2 years.
