When I took child development classes the only study that had been done said that physical punishment actually caused far less stress on the person than being resented.
The books all said that no other studies had been done on spanking because it would be unethical. I believe there is spanking that is correct and spanking that is not.
The hand should always be open or better yet a yardstick, which stings but is pliable, because "hands are for loving". And you should never spank in anger or to get personal satisfaction from it. But only spank because it is the right thing to do and in a little while talk to the child and give a reconciling hug.

This question is really excellent, but it also is somewhat misdirected.
The problem of hitting, as related to discipline is so often associated with this Bible verse,,,,about , "spare the rod", but here we are supposed to believe the " rod" is associated with a literal stick of some sort. IT was NOT meant to be associated with a literal stick for disciple purpose. The ROD is a word mistranslated from Hebrew text, which refers to the Rod as the means of teaching....as related in the Bible Psalm, "Thy Rod" which refers to the TORAH. King David said, the rod, the TOrah, was adequate to guide....there is no meaning for a stick of spanking. ANd I agree....spanking humiliates far worse than we know or realize....whereas the Torah, guides. TO refrain from teaching the Law of GOD is to make the child spoiled or rotten. Look at our now generation. Does it reflect the Law of GOD,,,,not to murder, not to steal, not to commit adultery,,,,to honor parents....you tell me,,,which would make a better society...to spank, or teach Torah? Even in Israel, where the Torah is ignored by the Israelites,, the crime rate soars to the detirment of that community and state...just as it does everywhere else. DO you think, Hezzbollah operates by the Law of GOD,,,murder, theft, lies, It may serve Muslim to operate this way, but its not any good for any society that wants to live and prosper. SIncerely

Maybe because they know what the Bible has to say about this subject.
Proverbs 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
Proverbs 23:13-14 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. 14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.
My parents spanked me and it drove the foolishness bound up in my heart far from me. It's a tried and true method of demonstrating to a child in a tangible way that there are consequences to disobedience.
If you tell your child that if they don't obey you then they will receive a spanking then it's perfectly alright to apply the right amount of corrective force to that portion of their body that God designed to receive pain without inflicting injury.

Being made in God's image has no longer some thing to do with the way we seem. God isn't a guy subsequently God can not seem as if a guy. God is a spirit. Spirits do no longer want air to stay alive. God is a male yet no longer a guy because he's not someone (no guy has ever considered God at each and every time). A male lion won't be able to be reported as a guy because he's not someone. To be made in God's image ability human beings were created with ability to worship even as animals were no longer.

Adam Clarke:
Notes for Verse 24
Verse 24. He that spareth his rod hateth his son - That is, if he hated him, he could not do him a greater disservice than not to correct him when his obstinacy or disobedience requires it. We have met with this subject already, and it is a favourite with Solomon. See the places referred to in the margin.
The Revelation Mr. Holden makes some sensible observations on this passage: "By the neglect of early correction the desires (passions) obtain ascendancy; the temper becomes irascible, peevish, querulous. Pride is nourished, humility destroyed, and by the habit of indulgence the mind is incapacitated to bear with firmness and equanimity the cares and sorrows, the checks and disappointments, which flesh is heir to."
McGee:
He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes [Prov. 13:24].
This is real child psychology. The child of God today is told the same thing. "Children, obey your parents,'' but the father is told, ". . . provoke not your children to wrath . . .'' (Eph. 6:1, 4). That is, don't whip them or discipline them when you are angry or talking in a loud voice. Wait until a time when you can calmly sit down with your child and talk with him and explain why he is being disciplined. That is very important. This is the reason my father's discipline was so good. He often did not deal with me until maybe a day had gone by. And I thought several times I had gotten by with it, but I hadn't. He very calmly dealt with me, and I knew he was not doing what he did because he was angry. Discipline is very important.
Matthew Henry:
VERSE 24
1. To the education of children in that which is good there is necessary a due correction of them for what is amiss; every child of ours is a child of Adam, and therefore has that foolishness bound up in its heart which calls for rebuke, more or less, the rod and reproof which give wisdom. Observe, It is his rod that must be used, the rod of a parent, directed by wisdom and love, and designed for good, not the rod of a servant.
2. It is good to begin betimes with the necessary restraints of children from that which is evil, before vicious habits are confirmed. The branch is easily bent when it is tender.
3. Those really hate their children, though they pretend to be fond of them, that do not keep them under a strict discipline, and by all proper methods, severe ones when gentle ones will not serve, make them sensible of their faults and afraid of offending. They abandon them to their worst enemy, to the most dangerous disease, and therefore hate them. Let this reconcile children to the correction their good parents give them; it is from love, and for their good, Heb. 12:7-9.

This is why it is pointless reading a Bible. Everything that is written in the Bible can be taken one way or the other and it gives no clear instruction on how to behave. So, really, you are left to decide how to behave for yourself. How should a person know how to behave when there are Bible discussion classes, where all they do is read a passage and then try to interpret its meaning. So, in the end, its not really what Jesus is telling you, but what you think he is telling you.

There is nothing wrong with swatting your child every now and then, because every now and then they need it! The problem is so many people go over board and we all know that. There will always be someone who will abuse everything, bummer. James Dobson also has a great book out called "Tough Love" and it is excellent, it's about setting boundaries for the children, they need them too.

Because...they don't understand the meaning or translation.
Spare the rod and spoil the child is talking about teaching your children boundaries and consequences.
If you love your children you will teach them boundaries. If they go past the boundary; they learn the consequence.
Discipline is taken from the word disciple; disciple means, to teach. We are teach our children what is right and acceptable behavior. Not let them run and dictate the household.
Grace to you and God Bless!

I know bible says "spare not the rod", speaking of discipline not abuse. In my studies, appropriate spanking is not abuse. Also psychologist and professional researcher strongly suggests there is no accurate statistic that can define children or adult that has been spanked are abusive parents or violent.

I don't get it wrong.
God told us that it would be necessary sometimes to use force to "bend" the will of a rebellious child, and that failing to exercise your parental responsibilities would result in a "spoiled" child.
God created us; I think He ought to know how we best function correctly.
Pro 10:13 In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.
Pro 13:24 The one who will not use the rod hates his son, but the one who loves him disciplines him diligently.
Pro 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
Pro 23:13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
Pro 29:15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.
Dr. Sears is incorrect in his intepretation of these passages.
The single largest problem we face in America is the extereme lack of discipline in the past two generations. These generations have been raised to believe (in general) that they are not responsible for their actions, that someone "owes" them something and that everything and evryone around them is relative to their own selfish needs and desires.
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. This "relative" "tolerant" philosophy is destroying this country.
God told us this would happen, and I'll stick with Him!
