As long as it isn't over 102.5 for an adult, it isn't necessary to bring the fever down. Sure you feel lousy, but your immune cells are working at their best so you heal faster.
Temperatures above this, however, can be dangerous to the brain and other internal organs. This means the body's temperature regulator has gone haywire. At this point acetominophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) or ketoprofen (Aleve) will bring down the fever.
If it is a severe fever 105 or above, typically one should go to the hospital where they'll likely administer other drugs and an ice bath to save the brain from damage.

my daughter frequently runs huge fevers, her dr. and several specialist say, put in luke warm bath (temp. of water should be such that you can't really feel it), let them soak for a bit. Take them out and let air dry, so the moisture soaks into skin. Alternate childrens tylenol and childrens motrin if fever is more than 102.5. If temp. is that high you would give doses at same time then tylenol every 4, motrin every 6 from that time on. Basically they get med. every 2 hrs. If less than that than just tylenol or motrin. Some even recommend nothing just to let virus or what ever is causing to leave system on own to build up immune system. But I'm not a dr. thats just how we treat hers! Good luck

Depends on why the person has a fever and how high of a fever that person has.
Apparently taking aspirin helps (it makes the person sweat - allot)
Constantly change the PJ's that are wet from sweating .
Apply raw potatoes on which you sprinkle a bit of rubbing Alcool ( that you cut into round slices) on forehead, palms, throat, and extremities also helps.
Another remedy is a cold shower ( in extreme situations - i do not suggest it )
ANd of course there are medications that your doctor can prescribe such as antibiotics and so on that can help ...depending on the cause of the fever.
Do not consider this medical advice. See your doctor if your fever is high or go to the ER if it's out of control.

take tylenol then in approx 3 hours take some ibuprofin, then in another 3 hours take tylenol again keep switching back & forth every 3 hours. It's perfectly safe because of the different ingredients. Dr.s recommend this all the time

acetominaphin (the medicine in Tylenol)
in extreme situations, a cool (not cold) shower can be used but be very careful to avoid chill and wrap the patient up well immediately after the shower

if it is a child and the temp is above 102 then make a warm bath and no matter how much they scream because it feels cold to them put them in it and under no circumstances let them cuddle up in a warm blanket it makes the body hotter.

Use rubbing alcohol. It evaporates quickly, taking the heat away with it. It's for immediate relief, of course.
