My 7 week old beagle refuses to leave the yard, i put him on a leash and he walks well with it until i try to walk down the road and he sits and cries, when i undo the leash he runs back to the yard. Where i live were not aloud fences and i want my dog to go on walks with me. I usually just let him in the yard without a leash but i want him to learn to go on walks. HELP

Hi there. You have a little guy there that seems to be just a little shy of leaving familiar surroundings. Think of when a pack of wild dogs living in the woods. Let's say they have a litter of pups in the pack, and they are 7 weeks old. Well first thing we know is that each pup has a different level of boldness, curiosity, etc. Humans are all different, and so are dogs. Ok now think of when the adults go off looking for food and they have to leave the pups behind. What do you think happens? Sure some of them may wander around a bit, other's may just stick their heads out of the den and go back in again. Each has it's own level of wander-lust. Your pup has the same tendencies. Now, before you try this or any other activity with your pup/dog, be sure you are in a calm/assertive state. The reason I say this is because, all dogs are made of energy. This is how they communicate. Your pup will be able to tell if you are happy/sad/hurt etc. All of this he can tell through the energy you give off. When you are calm/assertive, he knows that you are his pack leader, and that you know what is best for him. Having said that, why not try this....he's very young still, so please be patient. Walk him out of the yard just a little ways, then give him a tiny piece of his favorite treat. Don't feed him before doing this. If he does not want the treat, that's ok. The reason for that is because he may be nervous, tense, etc. When a dog is nervous, they will not eat or drink water. When you get to a point where you feel your pup is going to want to go back home, stop just before you get to that point, and turn around and head back towards home. Do not let the pup pull you. You need to show him that you are his pack leader, and he needs to listen to you. Scoop him up and put him near to your left side. Walk a little more and if he pulls again, repeat the scooping of him up and putting him to your left side. Another thing to always remember is, that all dogs need to go for a walk at least 30 minutes a day. This helps them expell some of their pent up energy. Your pup is too young yet for that, but when he's grown up, then he'll love you for those walks. Keep asking questions if you need too; it shows what a wonderful human you are.

It's a puppy...give the poor thing a chance to learn! It's probably just afraid of being away from its home. Go as far as you can and when it starts crying, turn around and walk back...gradually, once it gains confidence that you'll return home again, you will be able to go around the block. Depending on your city ordinances, chances are good that you should not let the dog off the leash outside of your fence. The key to training is consistancy, keep doing the same thing until the puppy gets the idea.

Be thankful your little guy wants to stay close to home. He's still a little young to go exploring. Try holding him and take him for a short walk. If he accepts leaving the yard in your arms, he'll get used to being on a leash in short order (maybe a month or so).

So many pups get killed or stolen by getting out of the range of safety. Sounds like your little guy is smart for his age.

You should feel fortunate that he likes his yard.. That is good. It is his territory.

I have to add something..I see where it is only 7 weeks.. This, again, is normal. When he gets a few weeks older, he will love to go walkilng with you and then you just hope the sweet puppie does not get out of the yard

He is still too young for a leash. Give it another 2-3 months. And not leaving the yard is actually a good thing.

Because he is 7 weeks, is not immunized and he at least knows he should NOT leave the safety of the yard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Puppies that young should not be on walks going down the street!!!! Walk him around the yard!!!! He needs vaccines on board first, or you may be bringing home a case of parvo!!!!!!!

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/fPf5r

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.
