Is it possible to be respected in America if you are not cynical?

I think people are respected when they have something insightful or meaningful to say. If you are a visionary, you are in great company (Thoreau, Blake, Miller or even Dillard and Pollan--who are still around).

Oh my! Yes, it is difficult for anyone outside of the norm to garner immediate respect. Whether a visionary or a 'weirdo' anyone seen as different will be viewed skeptically. This is a normal defense mechanism and is prevelent throughout the world, not just America. In fact, because of the nature of our rapid free-market system, visionaries are probably more likely to be embraced than shunned right out of the box.

It's being a judge of another's character to be a visionary. You have a problem if you are cynical. You can't expect everyone to live their life the way you expect them to live it. You earn respect by finding out what it means to another, & abide by that. No one wants to be around a cynical, whining, critical, know it all. That's foolish, & it baffles the heck out of me that you would think people earn respect by being cynical.

I disrespect Americans, even the ones that arn't cynical. You'll find one or two who are truely good people and smart, but usually they get out of the country and move else where.
