It depends. In some states such as Texas and Washington there is no state income tax. So if you do earn income, the state will not withhold income tax from you. However you do have to pay sales tax when you buy taxable items. In Oregon, there is no sales tax. However you do have to pay state income tax. That is why a lot of people who live in Washington take advantage of the no income tax withholding and then drive across the river to Oregon and do their shopping and pay no sales tax.

As for no state sales tax in Kentucky, unfortunately that is not true. Sales tax rate in Kentucky is 6%. People living there also pay property tax on their house and car.

If you earn income in that state during your visit then you have to pay taxes to that state on that earned income. If you are travelling as part of your normal job, then any income earned is considered to have been earned in the state where your principal place of employment is located.
