I did it once. What are the chances of the chute failing? Not bad, and there are two chutes, so what are the chances of two chutes failing, pretty much in your favor! A couple things if you don't know:

1) your first jump is a tandem jump, where you are hooked to the instructor and don't actually wear a parachute. You might want to very kindly ask the instructor to make sure you are hooked up right. Not too long ago a women died because her instructor didn't tether her correctly. Not trying to scare you, just the facts. My jump was also tandem, and obviously I'm alive!! They make you do a tandem jump first so they will know if you are going to freak or not. After that, you can pay for lessons where you jump solo, but instructors jump with you and hold on to you or stay nearby to make sure everything goes ok...plus before you actually jump solo you go through "ground school", rehearsing everything you would do in the jump.

2) make sure you jump at a place that takes video of jumps. You would hate to jump only once, and have no pictures. You would pay a small fee (should be under a hundred bucks) for a camera person to jump with you also. You will get still shots and a video tape, probably edited to music since there isn't anything to hear when you are falling at about 120 miles per hour.

Do it, have fun!

I started jumping in 1979 when I was in my first year of college and made 1200 jumps through 1991 when I stopped to raise a family. I really enjoyed it and have no regrets. But there are serious risks of injury or death. I don't particularly care for the "tandem" jumping program offered at most drop zones as a training method for new jumpers. I would go to a first jump course with an experienced jumper who is familiar with the operation doing the training. Don't be afraid to ask questions about the experience level of an instructor. Go out to the operation first and just watch how things are done. Check with the FAA about whether any complaints have been lodged with the agency about the operation and the nature of the complaints. Jumping is a lot of fun and can be safe if done correctly with proper training and preparation.

I would. I haven't gone skydiving, but I went on this thing called the rip cord at an amusement park and they said it's like a short version of skydiving. Because I free fell for like a hundred feet. So if it's anything like that, then definately do it!

I think it would be pretty fun to go skydiving at least once. I would of course look to be as safe as possible and only go with an accredited school/instructor.

. . . here in the UK we have a similar sport called muff-diving, usually practiced in the bedroom and nothing to do with heights - quite the opposite in fact . . .

No.
Why jump out of a perfectly good airplane anyway?
