I agree! No job allows its employees to smoke on the job. DHL, UPS and FED EX don't allow their employees to smoke on their routes. Mailmen aren't allowed to smoke either. I work in retail sales, and customer service, we can't smoke. I've worked on a farm, they don't smoke. It's not even just that's nasty, it's UNHEALTHY for anyone involved. It's bad enough they're a waste of tax payers' dollars, without us paying them to suck toxins into their lungs and pollute our towns' air with secondhand smoke! And, I've smoked a cigarette once, and I'd compare the high from cigarette smoking to being drunk. You get dizzy, and your vision is blurred. How is that unlike drinking?

Smoking doesn't cloud their judgment. It's a bad choice, but it's their choice to make. Cops are just people like the rest of us and some of them are addicted to nicotine. It would be different if a cop were drunk on duty, now THAT would be wrong. Most of a cops day is boring sitting in a car, so it would be impossible NOT to smoke for the whole 8 or 10 hour shift!

Preposterous! Nicotine and smoking cigarettes in general no more cloud our judgment than a couple of cups of coffee in the morning! Police Officers are people too! Smoking in public, maybe not. But while on duty? That's overkill. What's next? Prevent us from drinking coffee too? Having meals? Give me a break already ...
My answer to your question is, NO! I do not agree (and I am not a smoker).

Why...cigg smoking does not alter the mind or the judgement? Unlike drinking or other drugs. Cigg smoking only increases stimuli in the brain. In fact, it can reduce the stress that some officers have while on the job. I believe that they should be allowed to smoke, but out of public view. and not while on calls, or other matters.

So, you must think that no one should smoke at work. It could cloud their judgment and they're on company time, not their own, right? I don't like smoking either, but why would you single out police officers?

i really don't want to set my judgement up to yours for comparison, but then i can't resist. so the evidence you have to suggest that 'it can cloud their judgement' would be....? cell phones have been shown to 'cloud' attention and judgement and reaction time. i sure hope you don't go out in public with one of those things turned 'on'. even though you'd be on your own time, you're judgement, just like drunk drinking, should make you eligible for time 'to think about your irresponsible behavior' behind bars. and now that i think about it, maybe your employer might prefer to have employees who should not have sex on their 'off time'. they can randomly test your estrogen levels and know whether or nor you have defiled company ethics. give us all a break and try to make yourself a better person before thinking the solution to a better society lies in fixing the 'personal' behavior of everyone else!

You know pople like you should keep your opinion to yourself. I am not a smoker and do not appreciate it when people smoke around me but what they do while they work if others don't care then let them smoke if you don't they are just going to write more tickets cause they are going to be cranky I would rather they smoke than write tickets

I think youre correct but for different reasons. We as police officers are sometimes considered role models and it is not right for a role model to show such a habit to others. I dont think it looks professional for an officer to smoke while he is in uniform.
I think you should let your city chief of police know what you think too...

Smoking doesn't cloud judgement. As an ex-smoker, I can assure you, it clouds your judgement much much more when you're jonesin for a smoke than if you have a quick break every so often.
