That's the best question I have seen on Yahoo!Answers yet. Give yourself a pat on the back for that one. I didn't know they did that. But one answer to your question might be because it simply is standard medical practice to sterilize needles before using them, Infact ussually the needles come in prepackaged kits that are already sterile. Another reason might be because often the appeals are going on right up to the point of shooting the juice to the condemned. Now, wouldn't it be terrible if at the last moment the appeal was granted, new evidence arrived in the nick of time, the inmate is set free, only to get a sceptic infection from a dirty needle and die! Also, occaisionally the nurse or aide gets a needle prick while inserting the needle in the arm of the condemned. So, you wouldn't want an innocent person getting a needle prick from a dirty needle either, would you?
Thanks for your question. It was a hoot.

This same question has been asked about 35-times now. Bottom line - disposable needles come pre-sterilized; they are not specifically sterilized for recipients of lethal injections.

The thought is what if they live. If you live through what is supposed to be your death, you are off the hook. You can be released into society. They cant kill you 2x. That would be cruel and unusual. So would be injecting you with a dirty needle that would cause what life you did have left to be mounted with suffering. Thus get all individuals sued.

Sometimes an autopsy is done after as some states require one in cases of death by unnatural causes. Besides, its proper medical protocol. And in cases of a last minute stay of execution, you wouldn't want to see the ramifications if a person walked and then contracted some virus from unsterile implements.

Because they dont want infections or bacteria or viruses to kill the patient undergoing lethal injections.
If the bacteria, viruses or other infections kill the patient apart from the lethal dose of drugs and coroner finds out and writes it down as so in his/her report.....the family members of the 'prisoner' could sue the state for 'wrongful' death and the death was painful, inhuman....etc etc...bla bla bla.....AMERICA's dream SUE!!

Medical protocol. Some yahoo of a lawyer could probably claim substandard care or cruel and unusual punishment if they didn't.
