What is the status of a believer of such religions under Islamic law. I know that "people of the book" should pay a religious tax, what about these other religions.

People of the Book, i.e. Christians and Jews, are given a special status. Muslim men may marry chaste Christian or Jewish women. I'm not so sure about this, but I don't think pagans are allowed to live in a muslim land. Hindus live in India--not a muslim land...buddhists in china--again, not muslim...
We do not approve of idol worship, which would explain the destruction of those Buddha statues in a muslim country. However, Hindus and Buddhists are respected as people. All human life is respected, no one should be killed... Muslims are ordered not to insult the god/gods of any other person (it may be they will turn around and curse our own god). Their religions are not really respected, but the people are--we are not supposed to go and kill them just because they don't believe. Who knows, they may become better Muslims than us if given the proper guidance...

There is no religious tax. You have to pay the taxes whatever country your live and work and it is same tax with the Muslim countries.

We are commanded not to mock any other religion. Buddhism or Hindism if that is your religion than I have no problem or disrepect for your religious beliefs.

You mean like when the Muslim Talaban blew up the ancient Buddah statue in Afganistan to destroy it. On the other hand they do seem to co-exist in the same part of the World and don't fight. The activity between like religions like Jew, Christian and Muslim seem to spark more fighting.

well that's quite a question! anyway, 1st of all , after the change of the concept of the state & government in modern world , other religion believers' , like christians & jews " poeple of the book" as u refer to , they don't pay any tax now! because the religious state or country doesn't exist anymore. poeple , now in majority muslim countries , pay all tax in the same way.
about ur question, for those who are not jew or christian , we don't consider thier belief to be a religion. religions are only those which had prophets & holly books . prophets like Moses & Jesus , who we muslims believe that he is a prophet , not a son of god & lastly Muhamad.
but that doesnt mean that wise poeple , like buddha or konfoshios are not respected . those poeple should be respected for their great suffering to guide poeple & to show them what they spent their lives, ppl like buddha, to figure out & believe in. if u read deeply in their messeges & what they wanted to say , one will find that there are too many things that are not what they wanted or thought abt. like , buddha , himself , didnt believe in gods by anymeans!! that was the main conflict beween him & the holly men of the ancient indian religion. but , afterwards , when he was dead , poeple made him a god , while he didnt believe in gods in the 1st place.& that was along b4 jesus came .
anyway , we dont believe that they r like other religions but one has to respect poeple's believes so that they respect his & one has to respect minds who worked hard to figure things out as it took them a long journey & time . whether we believe in what they said or not , but respect is mandatory so we all can live in peace & finally let god rules who was right & who was wrong.
we dont own heaven or hell.
