I'm working on a puzzle and I'm stumped. I can't see a way to logically figure it out and am wondering if I should just start guessing. Please don't answer if you aren't familiar with sudoku. Thanks.

Hello,

Real sudokus should be solvable by logic. Guesswork is only required if there is more than one answer to the same puzzle.

The way that sudokus are generated in the first place is usually to start with a blank puzzles and randomly try to solve it by guesswork.

Then numbers are removed from the solved puzzle, and the remaining puzzle checked to see if it is soluble using the rules of sudoku- if not, then that number is replaced and a different one removed - and so on.

If you have a puzzle you have to guess for then the person who generated it probably didnt do a great job, or it is using some techniques that you dont know yet.

Try downloading from http://www.sudokuworkplace.com for some software that can help you work the logic.

I also recommend reading up on solving techniques here http://www.scanraid.com/BasicStrategies.htm

good luck!

ohhhh i love sudoku... just cant pronounce it 8(
anyways if ur stumped you really have to think logically and you'll find out a way to get closer to the answer... hmmm..... lets see... n write n the possibablites for the block in small numbers and if theres just one possibablity then theres ur answer um..... if there are two possibablities like 2 and 7 and then theres another block in the row or colom with only 2 and 7 then the other blocks in that row or colom with 2 or 7 cant have 2 or 7 because if one of the 2 and 7 boxes turned out to be 2 then the other 2 and 7 box would be a 7 or the other way around..... very confusing i know but try to imagine what it was like to put logical thinking into the most understandable way and those r just 2 ways that i could think of right now if your still stumped then email me at stupidisgr8@hotmail.com............i know the email address is deceiving but oh well hahaaaa and oh yeaaaa i agree with the top two!! yay!!

oh yea and sudoku isnt solved by guess work just logic ( to answer ur question) 8 ]

Most puzzles do not require guesswork.

Some puzzlemakers, like Tom Sheldon of Sudoku Genius, create an end condition where perhaps 15-20 cells cannot be deduced logically - but each cell only has 2 or, at most, 3 possibilities. Sheldon has devised a method he calls "trailing" to come up with the puzzle solution. And "trailing" is no more than starting with a single guess in one cell, and seeing if it results in an error elsewhere.

I am not a big fan of Sheldon's puzzles that ends with a trail - he identifies the puzzles in advance - but I like the level of difficulty of his puzzle so I put up with it.

All that is to say that you may have come upon a situation requiring "trailing" - other than Sheldon I have only come across one such puzzle, and that one only had 6 or 8 cells left undone, and that might have been a question of my technique.

Otherwise, it is your technique - you may be missing a pattern, or you may have an error in one of your completed cells. That has been know to make a puzzle look unsolvable without guessing.

okay i solve these things all the time on my brothers nintendo DS. when you don't know what the number is you write down what the number could possibly be, so all numbers 1-9 that can fit as of now write down, then as you further solve the puzzle you can go back and change it so that way you can solve it more logically... also try using the rows and columns as well as the 3x3 square see if there is anyway in either 3 ways you can solve it if not then move on to a new square, always works for me 5:17 is my best time, e-mail or IM with any questions check ya later ♥

I have done Su Doku ever since it was in America there are 4x4's 6x6's 9x9's and 16x16's and you have to use your logic and you cant guess. because if you guess most likely you will get the answer wrong and you will mess the whole entire puzzle up. I don't think that is what you want to happen. so my advice is to start the puzzle all over again and try it over again.and if that doesn't work which it usually does for me i would just not do that puzzle because it might be too complicated for you to do. And if you have any questions about Su Doku e-mail me at aduffsisterrocks@aol.com or brooklyn1995@yahoo.com.

Love,

Start guessing! You will find that you are right much of the time. Use a sudoku site like www.websudoku.com where there are hints and they tell you if you made an error.

If you have to guess - I mean there really is no deduction that can be made, then I would say it is a poorly designed puzzle. You shouldn't ever have to guess, and there should be only one solution.

I agree with Phil, show us the puzzle.
