As posted above, some thought that it would make you store fat, but again above, it will actually keep metabolism up.
The down side is that it is possible that it can keep you from falling asleep, especially if there are any stimulants in what you consume. On the flip side, if you eat turkey, the tryptophan can cause you to be sleepy.
Middle Eastern/European people have eaten dinner around 9 or 10pm, and drink wine all night, and they don't get the fat weight gain like we do....it is because their diet is high in unsaturated fats, and wine has a powerful antioxidant as well as being noted as helping to clean arteries. They are probably getting more exercise than we do as well!

I get nightmares... REALLY bad nightmares... if I eat right before going to sleep.
But as this is the "Health" section... you probably heard this because people think if you eat right before bed, your body will not burn off the ingested calories, and thus will convert it directly to fat, thus making you fatter.

This is scientific bubkus. Calories in and calories out are generally what matter, there's very little proof to the theory that eating (carbs) before bed makes you gain weight. If you eat 2000 calories a day but only burn 1500 a day, you will pack that extra 500 in as fat. It doesn't matter when you eat it or when you burn it. The balance is what matters. The human body is a little smarter than many people give it credit for....

No, its good for your diet. Your body takes about 4 hours to digest food. You should eat something every 3 hours to keep your metabolism going. Eating before going to bed will keep your metabolism going during the first half of your night. Some power lifters will purposely wake up in the middle of the night so they can eat something and keep their metabolism going.

Like somebody above me said about body builders, you need nutrients while you're sleeping because that's when your body repairs tissue. Don't eat heavey before you go to sleep, that can put pressure on your heart and cause a heart attack. It's also harder to sleep with food turning in your stomach. try drinking 1 liter of water and lying on your stomach. It's not comfortable! However, you do need nutrients, like protein, to repair damaged muscle tissue from the workout before. Even if you don't body buildy, eating before you sleep won't make you gain weight. Theoretically, it'll help you lose weight because your body won't think that you're starving yourself. If your body thinks you're starving, it will store everything you eat as fat in order to preserve your existence.
