to do a simple little test.

Police investigators can test a drop of dried blood on a car seat, and find out that persons whole life story, so why does a doctor need a whole ounce.

Doesn't make sense, are lab doctors not as good as the police dectectives when it comes to testing blood.

or are the police detectives just pretending that they can get all this info from a drop of dried blood.

anyone know, I'd like to know the truth.

med labs do a variety of tests with your blood. usually each test needs a fresh sample since each sample cannot be used for each test. corrupts the reulsts or something. cops use it only to identify DNA trace so it's a one shot deal. they know what they are looking for and that's why only a small amount is needed for them. even though the dosc tell you they are testing for ONE thing, they'll usually test you for anumber of things at once.

They are doing differrent tests. Police can get the information from the drop of blood, but they are looking for blood type and Rh and possibly DNA.
The lab is looking at a whole bunch of stuff like serum chemistry and doing blood cell counts and a whole lot of other things that can't be done with a drop of blood. Also included in this picture is extra for alarm retests and reference labs. If the picture looks pretty wonky, they will redo the test in the lab before the result goes out. That is an alarm retest. Reference labs are independant labs where a certain number of samples are snet to in order to verify that the answer you got is the correct one. (eg MCV and hemoglobin levels are the same number at both labs)

The crime lab is just doing a DNA test. The various vials that the lab uses on you have an anticoagulant in them used for various tests. Some have none for other test. The blood is spun in a centrifuge and just the serum or plasma is used. Depending on the results of the test the doctor may order additional tests so and wants blood draw for them to save you from being stuck again.

depending on what the doctor is looking for they don't need a whole ounce. They take 3-5ml per tube. That is so small in comparison to the blood volume in your body. Believe me, your body is not going to miss it. Everything in life is not CSI and if the lab company did have high tech equipment like that it would cost a whole heck of a lot more then what it does. Usually police are looking for DNA in a drop of blood and yes it is obtainable. They are not looking for complete blood counts and electrolyte levels. They would need a lot more blood and even that drop gets diluted somewhat. Hope that helps with your question

yes, because they are doing different tests than police who are just doing typing and chromosome count. Each vial contains some sort of agent that will contribute to an accurate test. Did you notice the different colored tops of the vials? Some of these vials will be spun down to serum and some will not. It's all a matter of physics....not trying to drain your blood for nothing. Lighten up...it's not that much.
