If your foot is on the brake and you're pressing the button, you could have a sticking or busted shift lockout solenoid. Take off the plastic and see if its blocking the little pin from dropping when you try and put it into gear. If it is, then replace it. Dealer part.

sounds like the neutral safety switch is bad or needs adjusted, look on your brake pedal at the top under the dash and you will see a switch that when you push on the brake this switch should push in releasing your gear lever,I believe its just a push in switch with a couple of wires on it.

make sure the emergency brake is not engaged. then check to see if the linkage is too dry, if so get some auto supply to refer you to the correct lubricant. you may need to check the gear shift armature.

you have to step on the brake first

or if the shifter moves without it going into gear you might have a linkage problem
